I accidentally seem to have stumbled onto a very effective and yet very gentle way of exfoliating my skin.
I normally give myself a facial massage once a week or so and I also use a mixture of coconut oil and honey to condition my hair. One day I decided to use the coconut oil/honey mixture to massage my face. As I massaged it into my skin it became sticky and pulled up masses of dark coloured debris. Obviously some of this debris was the honey itself, but some of it was definitely dead skin. I used a face cloth to wipe the sticky mess off my fingers and continued to massage until very little residue was coming off. When I finished the massage and washed my face, my skin was as smooth as porcelain and beautifully clean. It was also completely calm and free of irritation.
I have now done this around 10 times (twice a week), including my neck/decollete and my hands and forearms. The results are always the same - really smooth clean happy skin. My skin looks better every week. Obviously the honey is a natural aha, however I've used honey on my skin in the past and it really hasn't made any difference. I haven't tried it with other oils to see if the effect would be the same, but I love the effect with coconut oil so much that I probably won't bother.
I've massaged for as little as 2-3 minutes and for as long as around 20 minutes (including the neck, hands/arms). Either works. I personally love to massage until the skin is no longer throwing up any further residue.
For the record, I have normal/combination skin with large pores that clog easily, so I need an exfoliant, but at the same time I'm in my 40's so I don't want anything that will abrade the skin.
I've had glycolic acid peels at a salon, and frankly, this seems to work as well. Cheap, easily available ingredients, no harsh grains and you can add a couple of drops of essential oil to make it a more sensual and enjoyable experience. |

Great, thanks for the tip, luckylouie! I shall try when i get some coconut oil (wonder if it would work with any other oil mixed with honey). At the moment i use Lush's Angels on Bare Skin, and/or my own hands to gently press and wipe away any loose skin or sebum trapped in pores. I do this about twice a week, after a long shower, so my pores are open. |

I use whatever coconut oil is available at the healthfood store and I use around 30% honey. |

I don't accurately measure the oil and honey, I just eyeball it. As I said, around 30% honey and the rest coconut oil. This is one recipe where you really don't have to worry about accuracy. |

Brava, very clever idea. I will have to try it, I have 50-60 pounds of coconut oil. And you read it right, 50-60 pounds, not ounces, I make soap and use it as one of the ingredients.
Interesting tidbit, coconut in soaps can be very drying for some people, but on it's own, it's wonderful stuff. |

Boots has a line called "expert". This line is for the sensitive skin. The gentle scrub from this line is perhaps suitable for you. |

Hmmm...i have an intolerance to coconut oil....but i truly love this idea..since i love the texture of my skin when i do a pure honey 'mask'.. .. and i really need to be extra careful not to irritate my skin when i exfoliate..especially in the winter...i think i'm going to try it with shea butter and see how effect it is that way |

I'd love to know if people have had luck with this with other oils -- it sounds great, I'm just wondering if I can use what I have on hand or if there's a "synergy" with the honey and coconut. |

I did try this method with shea butter instead of coconut oil and it didn't work as an exfoliator...but it did leave my skin feeling/looking very very smooth after i washed off the sticky sticky residue! |

Does it have to be any special honey, or just any honey that can be picked up at costco or grocery store? |

What a great recipe this coconut oil and honey is, I loved it!
Today I am going to do it, with the addition of 1 TBS of plain yogurt, which will add lactic acid to the mix..(Buttermilk would work also!) |

thanks for sharing this simple and easy way of exfoliating with honey and coconut oil.
I love to try natural ingredients on my skin so I will definitely buy coconut oil this week!
Another simple and effective natural exfoliating method for me is tomato scrub.
Simply slice off the top of an organic tomato and coat it evenly with approx a tablespoon of sugar. After washing your face, use the tomato stream as a gripper and exfoliate it in a circular motion on your skin for 1-2 minutes. Then wait 5-10 minutes before rinsing off.
My skin is always clean and soft after this scrub! |

Louie,
Thx for sharing this method with us.
I have been using Kiehl's Biological peel; it is gentle but I would like to use organic stuff to do the job, thx! |
