Do many of you use Primers on your face before applying your foundation?
Are they really necessary?
I have seen Smashbox's Primer and Laura Geller's Primer, but it seems like it is just another added layer of gook to put on the face. Wouldn't a moisturizer and/or Sunscreen be enough before putting on foundation?
And, what are the benefits of Primer? Do they moisturize?
Any thoughts? |

I tried Smashbox's Primer. It did make my skin feel smooth. The primer prevented it from going into pores and lines. Unfortunately it also caused my skin to breakout into tiny bumps and zits. No primer for me. With more attention to the application of makeup (not too much) it's about the same (primer just makes it easier). |

I don't usually use primer but I would say primer contributes to nicer and longer lasted makeup. |

I never use primers. They are usually almost 100% silicone which my skin hates. But Smashbox primer seems to be loved by many. |

I don't use primers, I don't find them useful as the just add thickness to the whole make-up and I don't like how it is looks like. Another reason are the silicones, my skin doesn't tolerate them. |

Nowadays in most foundations or makeup actually kinda replaces primers at the same time.
Anyway, primers kinda build a layer over your face to prevent makeup from entering your pores and pollution. Since the layer needs to be evident, i think silicone are the best choice. Of course there are those primer who doesn't have silicone. It's up to your face whether they like it or not.
Personally, I don't like the feel of it, unless you have really dry skin. |

Thanks for the replies.
I purchased about 9 months ago Laura Geller's Spackle primer, but it is still in the box. I never used it. I do have oily-acne prone skin and thought it may make things worse. I guess I won't know until I try it out. |

It seems not necessary, but I always buy primers....I don't know why. Maybe it can last your foundation longer.. |

I just started using a primer and it feels like my foundation stays on longer. |

I have normal/combination skin and I like using primers mostly to mattify my skin and reduce the appearance of pore size. I like Smashbox, Cargo HD mattifier and Avon's face perfector for this purpose.
However, when it comes to extending the wear of make-up, I find that using Sofina's Perfect UV Lucent SPF 50 sunscreen does it for me. I usually skip the primer when I use this. (I just get tired sometimes of ordering it from Hongkong all the time). I just don't use this in the winter since it can be so drying for my skin but otherwise it's perfect for most part of the year. |

I highly recommend primers, (I have tried MANY, lol!).
I highly recommend a new one by Sisley, expensive, but one of the best I have ever used.
Also, Avon's is excellent as well, esp. for the price! hths.. |

I prefere to use the prime before using liquid or cream foundation, but I do not use it for powder.I don't want to apply too much things on my face. |

if you can find a good non silicone laden primer then they are excellent. i use Makeup Forever Hd microperfecting primer, it is a lotion but does not give a completely matte finish like typical silicon primers, thus it lasts and lasts. i think japanese cosmetics make much better primers, and they often distinguish between "moist" for drier skins and "fresh" for oilier skins, and there are a few which are not completely silicone based. |

Allure magazine in the second last issue on products to do without said that makeup primers is one product thats not needed. Many of them are silicone based and cost huge $$s.
And for those who insist on using a primer. My advice would be to purchase a tube or tin of that Glysomed glycerin/silicone hand protectant. I love this stuff for my hands!!
Put a bit on your face under makeup and this works just as well and you save a ton of money! |
