Okay, first of all, what is a retinoid? What exactly does it do? Can someone in their 20s use it? Well, late 20s, I am almost 28. Will it help with combination skin that has major blackhead cloggage going on in my t-zone area? Also, I have some fine lines on my forehead that I've been told are dehydration lines, what should I do for that when I have slightly oily skin the first place? Could they just be regular wrinkles? I also think I have crows feet! I just want a basic regime that is not too harsh that actually works. I would be willing to spend a bit more money for products that actually work. Thanks ladies, you're saving my life here....well skin!! |

Hi AM,
Here's some basic info about retinoids;
http://www.futurederm.com/2008/01/06/product-review-which-otc-retinol-treatment-i
If you don't have a dermatologist or don't especially want to hook up with one, there are OTC retinoids other than the gold standard, Retin-A, but results take longer.
Just remember to use a sunscreen of at least 30 with it.

Personally, I don't care for the information provided by futurederm. She is, after all, still a student and still learning (ie - she doesn't have all her info right )
Retinoids are different than retinols. Retinoids are the names given to the prescription strength tretinoins and their cousins which are retonic acids. (Retin-A, Retin-A Micro, Renova, Avita, Tazorac, Avage & Differin)
Retinols are the complete Vitamin A and need to convert into tretinoin/retonic acid in the skin. These are available OTC.
Retinoids are stronger than Retinols, but can cause more irritation too.
Either retinoids or stronger retinols (Green Cream) can help with clogged pores and fine lines. They won't help with dynamic wrinkles like crow's feet. Botox helps with that.
To read more on each of these, this website gives an excellent explanation:

In my opinion, futurederm.com is on of the best skin care blogs. Although she is "only" a student, she is a well-informed one. What I find most useful, is that she always provides various scientific studies and articles to back up her posts. I think the best part of her blog is the ingredient glossary where you can find information about the essential ingredients in skin care formulations. I have to admit that I don't always care for her reviews of skin care products though.
