Hi ladies! I need some wardrobe advice ASAP. I just found out that my husband's company is having their Christmas cocktail party this friday and I need to figure out what to wear in a hurry. The thing is, it's supposed to get cold again here in Boston this weekend and so I'm desperate to find cocktail attire that won't cause me to freeze to death. Bare legs are out of the question, but what style of dress can I get away with wearing tights with? And what kind of shoes can I wear with said tights? The only dress I have right now that would work is black---- could I get away with black dress AND black tights, or is that too much? And if I were to do black dress and tights, what color shoes should I aim for? Thanks in advance, ladies!

I don't have any fashion advice, but maybe your husband could drop you off at the front door of the establishment. He'll be wearing pants and won't freeze on his walk back.

I always wear a dressy pant suit on nights like that, some cleavage and great jewelry - works every time!

Good luck!

you can't go wrong with a black dress. i went to a wedding recently and it was cold! i worn a black dress (sleeveless), necklace (or you could do earrings depending on the neckline). I carried with me a shaw that would keep me warm when i needed it. I did wear a long coat just to wear in and out of the place but the shaw kept me fairly warm indoors.

That's kind of what I'm thinking. I've always kind of had it in my mind that a cocktail party called for a cocktail dress, but do you ladies think it would be so bad to wear slacks if I wear a glitzy top and fancy shoes?

I have my b/f's xmas party this weekend and I'm just keeping it simple. Black skirt with black tights and black mary-jane high heels with a funky top. Pashminas come in quite handy too. Can you wear regular nylons or something greyish?

sounds like it's a semi-formal party. so yeah, pants are okay. i think the accessories you add on will make it more dressy. i say go for the earrings, something shiny.

I was in exactly the same position as you a few months back: A cocktail do in winter and in a marquee outside. I wore a black jersey dress with three quarter sleeves, semi-opaque black stockings, black stilettos and I over-accessorized with a huge silver multi-chain necklace. Oh, and I had a silver shawl draped over one shoulder and a red evening clutch. I felt completely appropriate for the occasion - plus I didn't freeze!

I have an update! My husband and I made an emergency trip to the mall this evening, and I'm happy to report that the hunting and gathering was successful.^-^ I decided to wear dressy black pants, so I just needed a top and shoes. I struck gold right out of the gate and found this cutie at the Limited:

(I tie the sash in back...)

I'm going to wear it with peachy pearls and a black velvet wrap. Whew, it's nice to have everything figured out and squared away. Thank you all for your great advice!
