SkinMedica Retinol Complex
My rating: 5 out of 5. Outstanding product for reducing neck rings.
It’s a retinol complex in the form of a cream.
I’ve used this product on and off for about two months. It costs around $70 AUD for a 28g pump-pack.
What’s good about it? My neck rings are disappearing. Truly. I can’t believe this stuff. I introduced this complex into my nightly routine and my neck rings started smoothing out after about a week of use. After a month, they were dramatically reduced. Mr ej noticed the difference without my saying anything! It’s a thick cream with a faint lemon colour and matte texture on the skin once applied. I started sandwiching it between my existing routine of SkinMedica TNS recovery complex and Valmont Regenerating Radiance cream and the difference was dramatic. I use this retinol complex all over face and throat, including the eye area. I can’t really say it’s had a significant anti-ageing impact on the rest of my face, but my skin definitely started looking more even-toned after about a month. It definitely has a deep exfoliating effect, but there’s no AHA, BHA, scrub, specialist neck cream, demabrasion, baby quasar or laser rejuvenation treatment I’ve had that beats this product for reducing deep lines. I’ve got my fingers crossed that they’ll be almost gone in six months. No breakouts, no burning. I love this stuff so much I’ve bought packs for family and friends. It’s also a great price.
What’s not so good about it? It makes some areas of skin feel a little bit rough from time to time, but I could only tell from feeling it, not from looking at it. I haven’t been able to determine this company’s stand on animal testing, either.
I think this is a must-try product for anyone with deep lines who won’t have problems with retinol-type products (maybe a problem during pregnancy?), as it has a few different retinol-related ingredients in its formula.
Ingredients: water, cetyl ethylhexanoate, cetearyl alcolhol, cetyle phosphate, retinyl palmitate, retinyl acetate, retinol, oryza sativa (rice bran) extract (tocotrienols), tocopheryl acetate, tocopherol, epilobium angustifolium (Canadian willowherb) extract, camellia oleifera (green tea) extract, bisabolol, phytantriol, sodim polyaspartate, glycine soja (soybean) oil, cyclomethicone, PEG/PPG-18/18 dimethicone, steareth-2, caprylic/capric triglyceride, allyl methacrylates crosspolymer, butylene glycol, aminomethyl propanol, carbomer, phenoxyethanol, isobutylparaben methlparaben, propylparaben, disodium EDTA |

Great review, ejthomas. This product sounds really good. I have to ask though, have you used a Retinol product or Retin A prior to the skinmedica Retinol complex? |

hi rileygirl, thanks. Good question. I haven't ever used Retin-A, but I used to use Ultraceuticals' Ultra A Treatment Serum, which does contain retinol. Unfortunately I didn't get any outstanding results with that one. |

I ever used this Retinol product 2 years ago.
Yes, it did give me a kind of firming skin and even tone within 1 month.
But more important, you should always wear sunprotection cream at day time. I got a little sunburnt under sunshine in Australia. |

I have used the retinol complex recently and found it excellent. It does contain a number of other antioxidants as well as retinol which is one reason I bought it. I have re-ordered it as I find it works on my skin. I think if you've been using a stronger retinol product, it may not work as well. I think this product is a good one to start if you haven't used retinol before. My skin didn't react or turn red as a result of using it. In fact no negative reactions at all. |

Per the skinmedica website:
Q: What is the % of Retinol in your Retinol Complex?
A: Retinol Complex contains a 1.5% combination of three forms of vitamin A derivatives: retinyl palmitate, retinyl acetate and retinol, which equals 0.65% total retinoids. |

I have used this product before, and I agree. It is quite gentle and I like the way they formulate their products--not a lot of extra stuff. |

This doesn't have any side effects like dry peeling skin so it's more gentle. |

I actually wouldnt mind trying some products from this brand as I have heard alot of good things about it. I am very relucant to give skinceuticals vitamin c, so this retinol seems perfect to try. Thanks for the info |

How did you like the AFIRM 2x? I have tried the 1x...no great results for me but I was wondering if it was just too weak. |

ejthomas: thanks for sharing.
Does this product cause any peeling?
I always thought that peeling is a good thing from retinol products. I use Skinceutical 1.0 and it makes my skin peel on the third day. I definitely can't have any on my neck. Even if I accidentally rubbed over to the neck and behind the eyes from the pillow case at night, I will end up with rashes there for 2 days.
My pores are smaller from Skinceutical 1.0. But I have to stop using it now because my cheeks have become too sensitive, not sure if it's from the retinol.
Does you skin t3xture become more refined, ejthomas? |
