Recently I have been using the Obagi Nuderm system (10 weeks into it) to minimize my excessive hyper-pigmentation caused from over exposure to the sun. I never wore sunscreen(EEEEE!!!)I used to put tanning oil on my face.

Bad girl!!!

I am just wondering, will I ever be able to tan my face and have a suntan? I am a boater, it's very difficult to stay completely out of the sun. What about vacation? Do the spots come back right away?

Any suggestions?

Obviously I will be wearing sunscreen from now on.

Even if you weren't using Nuderm I'd tell you to never tan again! This is coming from a reformed sun-worshipper...baby oil & iodine in Acapulco..ah, those were the days Cool I don't use the products but I have pigmented areas. They're under control & barely visible..until the sun hits them. Even if you're protected, what happens is you won't get a tan necessarily, but the spots are immediately more pronounced. They always come back and you'd have to go through the whole shebang all over again..ain't worth it. Sorry

There is a certain glamour and prestige associated with a beautiful tan. It's easy to get drawn in. But ultimately it has to be a choice. Tan=aging permaturely. Period. Its a sign that your skin has been damaged. As much as its nice to have a tan, its also nice to look young. Better in my opinion. And there are sunless tan options, and bronzers, so you dont have to be pale as a ghost! Its not the same thing, but its at least something. Trust me, i've struggled a while before I accepted that *gulp* I'll never tan again.

LOL, Marina - between your comment and then your siggy line "...at 53 apparently I implode" - you have me in stitches...

And, Jeffiner, I think Marina's right. We're not allowed to tan ever again - unless we're willing to deal with the consequences. *sigh*

Reminds me of the sign my orthodontist had in his office years ago.

"You don't have to floss all your teeth every day. Just the ones you want to keep"

I guess that's kind of like tanning. I can tan if I want to. Only I will get tanned spots and tanned wrinkles too... Sad

Oh why can't we be sun goddesses and have glowing youthful skin and bake in the sun?

Its so hard because its like eating chocolate knowing that if you keep doing it it will make you fat but its so good but so bad.

I like the floss comment and how true. Couldn't have said it better.

I'm a boater and that means sun but I definitely don't want to look like those leather bags at the yacht club. Lol!

Well I guess everything in moderation. I will block with sunscreen and keep up with my obagi regimen. I would hate to see all the progress my skin has made be a waste once I hit the rays.

Damn! I love the sun.

I love the sun too..it would instantly clear up & cover those pesky pimples and made you feel like a million bucks! I'm off to look at the Acapulco pictures from back when dinosaurs walked the earth...according to smart-ass DD Rolling Eyes

Honestly thou could spending a day out on the water or vacation really effect you that much?even if you wear sunscreen faithfully? Obviously my spots and pigments were from repeated abuse and exposure. I'm just worried that one day in the sun even with sun block I'll have those spots right away.
I wish I got my mothers skin. Lol!
Any recommendations on good sun block?

I live in FL. I certainly don't stay out of the sun. Just use protection. Wear a hat, use a good sunscreen. ZO sunscreen is great for daily use. Dr. Lewinn's sunscreen is great for longer times in the sun, especially boating, etc.
