My daughter, 23, has had severe acne and been through 2 series of Accutane, 2 lots of different antibiotics, Differin, the pill and other topicals. While she is using the products, it does help manage the acne. However, when she is finished, it returns, albeit in a more moderate form. She thinks it could be hormonal or stress related. It is very debilitating for her however, and I really don't know what else to suggest. She is thinking of going back to the dermatologist, but I because of her past experience, I don't know if there is anything else.
Most recently she has used Proactiv range and this had helped for quite awhile, but again the red bumps are back and they're all over her face.
There are many products out there and it's difficult to know which ones to choose. She can't afford expensive products, but if they work I'm happy to spend. I am really at my wit's end as I never had this sort of problem growing up, just the odd chin and nose pimple.
Has anyone been through this and can anyone offer any recommendations for us to try? I would appreciate any advice at all at this stage. BTW We live in Australia. TIA. |

Hi Miss Anna - I felt so bad reading your post (it's worse when it happens to our children than when it happens to us, isn't it?).
The website acne.org seems to be a great site for sufferers like your daughter. The founder of the site came up with a simple system he calls 'the regimen' which has helped a lot of people, and there is also a very active community on the forums that share their experiences and rate products.
However, I would suggest that your daughter goes back to a dermatologist. If it is hormonal, antibiotics or going on the Pill are likely to be the things that sorts it out quickest - but she might want to also check out other ways of combating hormonal acne 'from the inside' with diet (drinking lots of water), exercise and supplements.
I also know a lot of people find the Proactiv system to work in the short-term but to be too harsh on their skin in the long-term. Maybe her skin would respond better to less aggressive regime.
Unfortunately, there doesn't seem to be one magic cure for acne and so there will be a lot of trial and error. And with some luck she might just naturally grow out of it.
Good luck to both of you. |

have you tried any ayurvedic treatments for acne?
Also she needs to cleanse her system out, blood specifically.....I have read about natural remedies for bloood purification. And if you go to a health shop you can find some pills/vitamins for that. Have a look into this.
Also avoid touching the face too much |

Thanks for your replies ladies. It is certainly harder when your children are going through this.
I have looked at the BOA product and the many positive comments. It certainly looks interesting. Being very analytical, I wonder how and why it works. I guess as Sodium Chlorite is the 2nd ingredient, that has a lot to do with it. I read a bit about it and it seems to be some sort of bleaching agent.
Keli, do you know of anyone personally that has used it?
My daughter will go back to the dermatologist as soon as she can get an appointment and I'll get her to ask about the ingredients. Unfortunately it might be awhile because of the holidays. She is eating reasonably well and getting some exercise.
I have never tried any ayurvedic treatments. What should I ask for at the health food store? Remember I'm in Australia so they may not have the same brands here. |

I heard (read) in another thread that chinese medicine works to get rid of acne. I don't know what it is specifically, but I think if you go to Chinatown, you can find a chinese doctor. A friend of mine went to one, and she was impressed. |

Has your daughter tried Spironolactone? I also had hormonal acne that wouldn't respond much to traditional treatments (BC, various topicals, the Regimen) and it worked wonders for me. |

they have special ayurvedic clinics.....do a search round and hopefully there is one close by to where you live. The ayurvedic consultant will will do an analysis based on looking at skin, eyes etc...and recommend a treatment accordingly.....Ayurvedic treatments work best if done correctly so better to seek a proffesional ayurvedic consultant and go from there. |

I dont know if this info will help - there is a post about it already.
Ive had acne for about 20 years. I tried everything - except accutane.
I stopped drinking milk 3 months ago and even though i still get occasional breakouts during my period - my skin has NEVER been so clear for so long. |

I agree with you, I think this kind of persistent acne is certainly related to endocrine disorders, looking for a product for acne treatment is not enough, you should try to find chinese medicine, I have had this experience.i have acne on my forehead, and I was taking chinese medicines just for the treatment of dysmenorrhea.three months later, I was surprised to see the results that my acne on the forehead had disappeared gradually.

I agree with some other posters that your daughter sounds like she has more systemic imbalances- whether hormonal or dietary is tough to tell. I've had luck with spirinolactone and Acutane however neither permanently fixed the problem. Right now I take Yasmin for the management of my acne; I am relatively happy with my skin currently. Your best bet is to get her on a decent non-irritating skincare program to manage the surface of her skin (Paula's Choice products are trustworthy and not expensive, but not sure if she ships internationally--www.cosmeticscop.com), AND also to see a dermatologist or an Ayurvedic practitioner (I haven't tried eastern medicine, but it sounds interesting and worth a shot, but only if you are willing to do what they say--dietary changes and all. A Dermatologist is only going to prescribe but will not look into overall health, diet and endocrine system). I would also suggest seeing another dermatologist. Sometime one doctor will be more likely to try another route than other.
Miss Anna, good luck. I pray my daughter does not have to go through what I've been through. So I really feel for you and your daughter. If you have more questions about what I use or my skin type, I'm happy to share. |

Hi miss-anna
I have a similar problem and I'm 24. I've been suffering from acne since my early teens and nothing has helped it. I have been using Sothys for more than a year now and it really cleans my skin well but I still get the breakouts since for me it's hormonal. I can't be on any hormonal therapy since I'm allergic to the pill and any other hormonal treatment that I've tried.
The only thing that is kind of working on me is the chinese herbal medicine. I know you've said that your daughter does not want to spend a lot of money but I really believe in alternative medicine and as you would know there are a lot of Chinese medicine practicioners in Australia. There are loads of them on the Gold Coast where I live.
I'd definitely recommend that she try it but then again the problem of the acne coming back is still there. I guess you would just have to talk to a practitioner and see what they say about reoccuring acne after the treatment.
Good Luck! |

Thanks for all your help and the different ideas. I haven't heard of Spironolactone. I see it's a drug used for high blood pressure. She actually has low blood pressure, but we can mention it to the derm. I have also talked to her about going to see a Chinese practitioner. |

Hello all and Happy New Year!!!
I'm trying the Buzz on Acne along with my 15 yr old son. So far we have been using it 1 week and his skin seems to be clearing up alot. My skin I think is purging on one side of my face. The other side is clear. I have read great reviews on qvc beauty banter so that's why I decided to try it. I still have the dreaded hyperpigmentation on my upper lip which I wish could go away. But anyway I will keep you updated on my progress. |

My 22-yr. old son has suffered from acne for about 7 years. He's tried everything your daughter has tried...retin-a, antibiotics, accutane, etc. What I have him doing now seems to really be helping...in the evening he cleanses, then uses IFP's 5% BHA/10% AHA, waits about 30 min. then applies differin. In the a.m. he cleanses, then uses a 2% BHA. He tried retin-a for years, but it was always a little too harsh for him. The differin suits him better. I follow the same p.m. routine as I still suffer from acne at the ripe old age of 51...ugh!! It has also helped me a lot. We both use a gentle cleanser. HTH and good luck...I think acne can be absolutely debilitating and the ultimate self-esteem zapper. |

Thanks fab50. What's IFP? My daughter has tried the 2% BHA and 10%AHA separately, but not 5% BHA. She has tried differin but I can't remember whether she used it alone or with other actives. I'm glad you've found a routine that is helping you and your son. It really is unfair when people continue to have acne past their raging hormone years. It certainly is very debilitating and many people (like fathers) don't understand how bad it can make you feel. |

Here's the link to the 5%BHA/10%AHA combo...
http://www.ifeelprettyproducts.com/exfoliants.htm
Scroll down to the last product on the page. She suggests only using this if you're used to using exfoliants, so you may want to start out slower depending on what your skin is accustomed to. Also, I don't know where you live, but she can't ship outside the U.S. The owner, Kim, has outstanding customer service. HTH! |

Thanks fab50. I live in Australia so that's out. I'll see if I can find something similar here. My daughter's skin is not too bad at the moment. I think I agree with her that it seems to flare up even more when she's stressed. She's on holiday from work at the moment and she's finished most of her exams so it's a relaxing time. I don't know if there is anything to help in this situation apart from doing relaxation exercises and trying to keep calm. She's a worrier like my mother was. |
