Some people like doctor Obagi say mineral oil is bad. Other doctors disagree and say its harmless, since it is so refined. It's a bit of a debate in the "skin community." I personally choose not to use it. But there are many people with excellent skin who use it. Tyra Banks slathers vaseline all over her face and she looks fantastic. Marcia Cross is said to use Creme de la Mer and she looks great too.
I haven't seen any studies proving it was bad for the skin. The problem with mineral oil is that it "locks" all the other ingredients to your skin, like a sheet of plastic wrap. Some people think its bad since your skin cant breath. Others think its fine, as long as none of the other ingredients that will be locked against your skin are acne-causing or irritating.
By the way, don't believe all the stuff about it being related to crude oil or what have you. It is not toxic since it undergoes a refining process. It is used on babies after all. |
Yep, I've heard this too. In fact, I thought based on what I had seen in the last few years that Mineral Oil and Petrolatum were horrible for the skin. However, I recently had an issue with dry hands and wrists that felt like lizard skin. I tried exfoliating but that didn't really help much. I then used a cheap hand lotion that I had around the house and in one day my hands were as soft and smooth as baby's skin. I looked at the ingredients and found that Mineral Oil was #2, meaning it was pretty strong in the lotion. I then researched why mineral oil has gotten such a bad rap to find out that some people dislike it because of what it is but that the mineral oil used in cosmetics is very refined and there is no documented evidence that it causes harm to the skin. It is a great emollient, meaning that it sits on the top of your skin and prevents any moisture from being able to be removed from your skin. It keeps the moisture in. I have since used products with mineral oil on my face (my favorite is Eucerin Original Healing Soothing Repair Creme...LOVE that stuff!) and found my skin to be ultra soft and smooth. Even my husband has commented on that recently.
I know that there are other oils that function as emollients, so it's not necessary to use mineral oil this way. If you prefer not to use it on your skin that is fine as well.
Personally, not a lot of things break me out...anymore (they used to when I was younger) so I don't have that sort of issue. If your skin "rejects" products by breaking out in acne type lesions or a rash then of course discontinue use. |
