Hi and welcome to the forum
What do you do in terms of exfoliation if you don't mind me asking? I would start off by incorporating a good exfoliation routine. Perhaps dry body brushing (be careful with the armpits though) and also incroporating a good scrub with Glycolic Acid. MD Formulations makes a good one, it's called Face & Body Scrub.

would it be worth trying a higher spf on these areas, or is that too fiddley? Just thought that maybe it's something to do with melanin distribution. BTW I have an afro-carribean friend who has similar dark area on his nape and it's a family thing with him as all his family have it and to be honest it has quite a sexy look! |

I saw that to, isn't it that kojic stuff that's in the PTR dark circle eye gel that's the active ingredient? |

Many ethnic people have this condition. It is called "hyperpigmentation" There is a cream that will help. I use it myself and it does work.Get the Obagi Clear 3. I had posted the procedure on this cream. Just read all my post(they are all about skin lightening). I would recommend getting a chemical peel to speed up the process. If you are not allergic to hydroquinone there is a peel from Physicians Choice of Arizona (PCA peel with hydroquinone) that will work for you. If you are allergic to hydroquinone try fruit acid peels. |

Hi
I also have similar problems... I'm of Asian origin & have light brown skin tone w/ hyperpigmentation in quite a few places. I ordered "Sure White" skin lotion fromwww.guesso.com yesterday. It has all natural ingredients like kojic, licorice, etc. that are skin lighteners. U can also apply a 5% or 10% glycolic acid on top of it to increase absorption (be careful w/ glycolic over 30%). Take care. |

This is an old thread so I'm not sure anyone is still checking it. My mother in law had a problem with dark elbows which she hated. I bought her a tin of pure shea butter from L'Occitane which she used every day and it got rid of the dark areas on her elbows. You warm a little bit in your hand and apply it. She loves it. She sent me an email telling me that her skin had cracked every winter until the last one where she was using the shea butter. She was thrilled to have such a simple solution. The large tin from L'Occitane is packed full and lasts forever. |

My daughter has this problem. Although she is blonde and fair-skinned, her underarm area is several shades darker - almost as if the skin belongs to a different person. She has found my Neo Strata HQ cream to be useful. |

I asked a dermatologist about that and she said it's from friction (well my inner thighs). She seemed pretty matter of fact about it and didn't offer any solutions... I'm happy to read your suggestions. I think mine was from when I gained a bit of chubb and my thighs would rub together, that or running, as I didn't notice it before.
Guapagirl - yes the darkened nape is sexy, my bf (mexican) has it. |

Darkening of the skin in those areas can also be associated with polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS). It's a hormonal/metabolic disorder. If you have other symptoms of PCOS such as excessive hairiness, acne, problems losing weight, and heavy, painful periods you might want to look into it. |

I have PCOS and although I don't have this issue it was something my GP asked about and checked. It is actually due to insulin resistance (although not necessarily in your case) which is common in PCOS. If the skin seems a little thicker / rougher than else where on your body I would certainly asked to be checked for PCOS or insulin resistance. |

I have the same problem too . I sounds like we have the same skin tone. I don't know what to do about it, but was looking into getting the papya soap, which is supposed to help. |

I've got this problem as well. For years, and it slowly gets worse.
My derm told me it's irritation of pigment that is deep in your skin. He said nothing is to do about it.
But once I read that it's caused by silicones (from plastic surgery) which migrate through your body.
Do people of you with this problem have had a breast augmentation????
I can't try whitening creams: they often contain lactic acid and I am allergic for lactic acid |

I also have the same problem too and I never knew what to do about it, but after reading this forum, I'm going to try an exfoliant to see if that would help. |

charm25, do you work for the company or are you selling this product? If so, be careful of violating forum rules.

I thought I'd give my 2 cents on this. I'd been struggling with this problem for YEARS. Darker skin on my underarms, thighs and nape. It's so bad that I refuse to wear tank tops in public. I always tried those skin lightening creams, but nothing was ever satisfactory.
I did stick with Dermadoctor's expensive lightening antiperspirant for a while, and yes it lightens the skin, but instead of lighter underarms, what I found was I got patchy underarm skin! (A bit darker in some parts, lighter in others... not attractive!)
I've tried Likas Papaya soap, and it DOES lighten the skin a little bit, but not nearly enough to get rid of obvious darker skin in those areas.
Finally last year I got diagnosed with PCOS, so I have my explanation for the darker skin, but still no way of treating it well. It'd be great to hear if anyone has anything they've tried that's worked well. |
