I just made a vit C serum and scooped the remaining sea kelp out of the jar I've had in the frig for about a year. It had a brownish tint. Is it bad?

Hi, Mountaingirl. Did you buy it at Skin Actives? I would ask Jonatan (sp?)if it's still usable. He has been quick to reply and helpful with my questions. If you find out, I hope you'll post back here.

Yes!

Pitch it out, including the C serum.

SKB has vitamins, minerals and sugars, that can start to degrade once it's been opened.. A good rule of thumb is to always throw away what has turned a different color, or what smells foul.

Ok Kassy, thanks...I'm pitching the whole batch of C serum I made and the remains of the Sea Kelp in the jar. I did buy it from Skin Actives and already placed an order for a fresh batch. I'll call Skin Actives today, and ask about shelf life in the frig and post back.

I wrote Jonatan at Skinactives:

I had a small jar in the frig for about a year and now it has a brownish
tint. Is it bad?
What is the average shelf life if kept in the frig?

Jonatan from SkinActives Response:

It should be fine, check the consistency of the seakelp if it is a gel that absorbs into the skin it will work for you. We usually suggest using the seakelp as quickly as possible but it should be fine for a year.

Jonatan

Its the trouble with Vit C in products, Vit C is so sensitive to light, heat and air and its a problem that EVERY company who makes Vit C in their lines have.... its unstable in solutions. So for isntance, in Vit C products, once is starts to even slightly change colour (as any product with Vit C will), it goes from lighter browns to darker brown is simply the process of the Vit C becoming degraded and in-effective. I would ditch it as Kassy says!

Had you already thrown out your gel?
