Over the past two weeks the southern states of Australia have been experiencing the most incredible heatwave - temperatures of over 40 degrees cent. every day. Now they are experiencing the worst bushfires in history. Whole towns have been destroyed, as I write, over 160 people have died and many are seriously injured. The fires are burning over vast areas of the state of Victoria and also in South Australia. This is the worst disaster in Australia's history.

My heart goes out to all of those who have lost their homes and loved ones.

The reports I've been reading about the bushfires over there are terrifying.

My brother-in-law and his family moved out to Adelaide last May and are safe, thank goodness, but it's very worrying indeed about all those who haven't been so lucky.

I've been hearing reports on the news here that some of the fires are believed to have been started by arsonists. Unbelievable....

I was just reading about this, the fact that it may have been arson makes me so angry. I lived through hell in Greece last summer where arsonists started or helped the fires. Terrifying...they wouldn't stop burning. Just when it seemed they were contained some idiot would start them up again. WHY?

I live in Victoria the state where all these terrible fires are. It is believed that a majority of these fires were deliberatly lit. The devestation that it has caused is extremely hard to comprehend and it is believed that the true amount of deaths will not be known for a long time, they are estimating over 200 people to have lost their lives and 650 houses burnt to the ground.

Keliu. I'm really sorry you are having to go through this devastation in Australia. It is especially horrible that it is arson. It is horrific and people where I am are thinking of you all over there and wishing you well. Harriet

Yes, it's very distressing to know that these fires have been deliberately lit (how on earth do they figure that out?) Apparently arsonists are typically teenage youths who have been shown no love and affection as children and are, as a result, anti-social. When the heatwave first struck there were constant warnings in the media not to light fires. I said to my husband at the time that the warnings will encourage fire-bugs - I think this has been the case and there is now much discussion about whether it is wise to issue warnings.

In addition to the fires, we have terrible floods in the north of the country and one little boy has been taken by a crocodile. Honestly, it's like Armageddon here! Mother Nature is certainly in overdrive - the UK is in the middle of a deep freeze and we're burning up - crazy!

At times like this, prayer speaks louder than words, so please know you are in mine;

We've been avidly following what's being going on with the fires--it's shocking and hard to comprehend that someone would deliberately wreak this devasation on their neighbours. Crying or Very sad You're all in our thoughts and prayers--please keep safe! Is there anything we can do to help?

I've been watching coverage of this for days, and have also donated, but I can't even begin to comprehend the loss and destruction. Police apparently have a suspect for a few of the fires and hopefully will find the other lowlifes as well.

Up north, 60% of the state of QLD is flooded. That's about 500,000 square miles of land that is under water. Ironically, we're in a drought.

Sending lots of postive thoughts your way...and secret hopes that these arsonists will burn in their own little hell in time. Mad

I've been following the stories. There are no words for the tragedies. I can't get over one story I read about a mother and children hiding from the fire. Prayers to the victims.

i saw it on the news today and it is very depressing....particular one about a family hiding in their bathroom thinking the water would save em......but due to the fires the water burnt them from rising on to boiling temperatures Shock must be soo horrific for the victims. Hope they catch the loosers that started this!

Twenty-five years ago, I spent a lovely vacation in Queensland visiting an Australian charmer I met in Greece. I've had a soft spot for Oz and its people ever since. A year ago last October my family and I were packed and waiting for the call to evacuate our home because of wildfires (I live in San Diego county, California). The sky was black with ash and smoke, whipped by a Santa Ana wind, all the local businesses were closed, and we were glued to the computer, the best source of information about where the fires were spreading. But however bad the fires were here, we had nothing like the loss of life that's happening in Australia. It's a real tragedy and I feel very helpless. My prayers are with the victims and those they have left behind.

Let's not forget the animals too. People have lost pets and horses - not to mention all the wildlife. We have images of poor little singed koalas being given a drink of water by fire-fighters, and they're the lucky ones. How much of our wildlife has perished is a terrible thought.

The fires continue to burn and there is no let-up in sight. All the fire-fighters are exhausted.

My heart and prayers are with you all in OZ. I so hope the fires die out and you can get back to somewhat of a normal life. Those that are responsible will be taken care of in good time I am sure. They will IMO, know what a "fire" really is like and not be able to die.

Is there a fund going for donations, and if so would it be okay to post the address here, for those interested in making donations?

It's just so sad and awful.. And to think it was started by punks with too much time on their hands, makes it all the more egregious.

Many blessings to all, and the poor helpless animals as well.. Pray

I have close friends who have been updating me since it started, and my heart and good wishes go out to all of you involved and your family and loved ones. I hope they catch these idiots and that others learn from this example that arson is not something to be proud of!

Here is the website for the Australian Red Cross - however, I'm not sure if they're able to take international donations.

I think about this off and on all during the day. I tear up or cry everytime I see it on the news. Just terrible to think how heartless some people can be.
God Bless All and the animals too.

I couldn't have said it better myself. God Bless the victims, the firefighters, the pets, and the wildlife.

I found that the Herald Sun in Australia is selling the famous picture of Sam the koala drinking water for $20 with all the proceeds going to the CFA--- I bought one as quickly as my little fingers could type! If anyone is interested, here is the link:

Its been on the news this morning that Sam is actually Samantha and she now has a boyfriend - another little koala with burnt feet, so they can't hold paws but they like cuddling up together in their cage.

Now isn't that a lovely Valentines Day story Very Happy
