You might want to post on the DIY forum, but I assume she recommends unrefined.

For coconut or palm I use unrefined, for avocado I use cold pressed.. Whole Foods and most supermarkets carry it in the natural section.

Just an FYI for avocado oil. Buy small bottles (8oz) or so and keep in fridge once opened. It will get semi-solid, when refrigerated, but will liquify quickly at room temp.

Kassy, does cold pressed mean that it is refined?

Unrefined Oil - oil that has not gone through a process to hydrogenate the final product. The oil is obtained by mechanical extraction. All saturated fats, acids and in some cases cholesterol remain. Color and scent will usually be intense.

Refined Oil - oil heated (sometimes to 450 degrees) then cooled, to remove strong natural scent, color and along with that some of the saturated fats.. This makes for a nice massage oil.

Cold Pressed - the oil is obtained by a method of mechanical extraction, utilizing the entire fruit (seeds and all) which is pulverized into a paste then gently heated to liquify. All saturated fats, vitamins and acids remain intact.

For anti-oxidant/nutritional value, cold pressed + unrefined are great for DIY.. My preference is cold pressed because it just seems to be a little lighter to me, and I find it absorbs better.

Cold pressed is the method of extraction of the oil; they use a hydraulic press without heat. (I have read that only olive oil and 1 other than I can't remember are truly cold pressed.) Refined oils are heat extracted with chemicals and then they have to be bleached, etc.
