Let's make this a sticky so everyone knows! I'll start with

1. Retinol should never be used together with AHA's because it gets inactivated. But can be used with BHA's and Vit C and E

Any others to add?

C and E are good together.

AHA and C can cause irritation if used together (both are acids)

Niacinamide is good with everything.

can AHA be used in the morning and retinol at night? or you shouldn`t use AHA at all while using retinol?

I have done a lot of looking around for just that answer - what can you use with AHA and not neutralize the AHA or the active you mix with the AHA. From what I have read you can safely add things like palm and cocnut oils, anti-oxidants like alga and cucumber extracts. I recently added Co 10 to my AHA base have no idea if it is working but ....

I think you can use AHA in the am and retin pm. My understanding is AHA will act as an exfoliant so if you experience redness etc from the retin the AHA is going to increase that.

BTW what is a sticky?

Look at the first few posts on the board, they are called Sticky, which means it stays there and never moves, unlike the other posts which gets pushed back when it isnt active!

this shud be easily accesible to everyone as we all can share our knowledge!

ok, but Avene has a product called Diacneal. it contains 0.1% retinaldehyde + 6% glycolic acid. Is glycolic acid not AHA? is it not supposed to neutralize retinaldehyde?

retinaldehyde is not retinoic acid nor retinol. An aldehyde is chemically stabler than an acid or an alcohol. That is probably why it is ok in solution with AHA. But the skin can convert retinaldehyde to retinoic acid once applied.

thank you for answers Smile
I wonder... if AHA and retinaldehyde can be combined in one product (that is if AHAs do not neutralize retinaldehyde), then -
I`m thinking of trying Peter Thomas Roth unwrinkle pads (containing AHAs), they have very good reviews on MUA, but I`m using Avene Eluage (0.5% retinaldehyde, 0,5% hyaluronic acid). Is it ok to use the acid pads before Eluage? will they not neutralize it?

there should be a master list up after everyone's posted the major ingredients that shouldn't be used together.

It would be super helpful!!

i keep hearing/reading that AHAs can not be combined with retinol, however, i just purchased (online at EDS) gloRetinol cs by glotherapeutics which has 5% glycolic acid and 3% retinol. i am really looking for a good retinol product. should i be rethinking my purchase? i would think glotherapeutics would have done their research on this, thus I am now confused.

Where did you hear this? This is not true. AHA will help the Retin A penetrate deeper in your skin.

ETA: benzoyl peroxide is supposed to deactivate retin a.

In doing that I come up with a large number of articles, since you know which article it is would you mind posting a link to it. Simply highlight the link from the web browser and do a cut and then paste it to the forum thread (Ctrl C for cut and Ctrl V for paste) TIA
