They are not the same. Skinceuticals retinol has weaker activity. It needs to be converted in the skin to retinaldehyde and then to tretinoin. Renova contains the end product tretinoin which is the chemical that acts directly on the skin cells. It doesn't need any extra steps to convert it into the active chemical. You need a prescription for Renova but not for Skinceuticals retinol.
On the other hand, retinol has lesser side effects compared to Renova (e.g. peeling, redness, "purging" - increased pimples when you first use it).
It depends on the condition of your skin which one you would use. Retinol is more for prevention of fine lines and other ageing changes. Renova would be for those who already have established ageing changes and sun damage to their skin. I understand Renova by prescription is very expensive unless you are convered by insurance. |
