This website tells of antioxidant nutrients for skin protection taken internally or as topicals, although you are required to buy the complete information in their site.

http://www.smartskincare.com/nutrition/antioxidants.html

So i did a little research and found these three Antioxidant formulas that seem to be the best out there:

Ambrotose AO Glyco-Antioxidant Supplement = this supplement from Mannatech contains grape skin extract, green tea extract, quercetin, Australian bush plum (vitamin C) and vitamin E in combination with a proprietary blend of glyconutrients and vegetable/fruit extracts (phytonutrients).

OxyPhyte Ultra Blend/Super Plus = an ao complex from RFI Ingredients blends a proprietary combination of white tea, rosemary and apple. In addition, the Super Antioxidant version includes quercetin, green tea, pomegranate, and olive extracts.

Radical Fruits (or Fruits of Life) = from Garden of Life contains Grape skin/seed/fruit, Raspberry, Goat's milk whey, extract, Pomegranate extract, Apple skin extract, Prune extract, & Blueberry extract, with alkalinizing minerals, enzymes and probiotics that aid in digestion and elimination.

Others i found which i dont think are as potent as the top 3 above are:
Vaxa Anti-Oxin+
Cascading Revenol
Ultra Antioxidant™
LifePak Anti-Aging Formula

Embarassed I go through phases of "supplement taking" and then for some reason (laziness, forgetfulness etc) stop.

I have taken Grape Seed extract before and this is supposed to be a strong antioixdant. I also drink a lot of green and rooibos tea - both of which are strong antioxidants. I also went through a Alpha Lipoic Acid phase (also a super antioxidant) but no longer take that either (due to headaches from what I recall though, not lazyness). I settle for ALA in skincare now Smile

Pills can't do what fruits and vegetables can do, skip the pill and eat 20-55 servings of raw fruits and vegetables per day instead:

Fruit and vegetables increase erythrocyte glutathione peroxidase activity and resistance of plasma lipoproteins to oxidation more efficiently than do the vitamins and minerals that fruit and vegetables are known to contain (Am J Clin Nutr. 2004 Jun;79(6):1060-72.).

The link between high fruit/vegetable intake and reduced chronic disease may be partly explained by antioxidant protection. In one study, 77 healthy men whose typical diet contained few fruits and vegetables (mean of 2.6 servings/d) were given a daily supplement (272 mg vitamin C, 31 mg all-rac-alpha-tocopherol, and 400 micro g folic acid), or placebo, for 90 d with their usual diet. Supplementation increased plasma ascorbate and tocopherol, but had no effect on the oxidant biomarkers.
(J Nutr. 2003 Mar;133(3):740-3.)

Bloody hell! Shock Shock Shock who has time to eat 20-55 servings of raw fruit??????

I'm not a gorilla, I do have other things to do besides eat all day!...Though I spose I could munch on celery or apples all the time I'm studying...4 pieces an hour, I supose that leaves time for sleep and long trips to the loo Laughing

I'd have to sit on loo and munch all that especially if I was drinking regulation amount of water too. Course I expect I would have a very sore bottom eventually.

That's what I am thinking! 22-55 servings seems like too much of anything! Anyway, I eat low-carb and it has does wonders for my skin too.

5-10 servings of raw fruit, 15-45 servings of raw vegetables.

It's your body, your choice. If you don't think you are worth it, that is entirely your affair. And yes, your GI tract is more similar to a Gorilla's than you might think:

Interesting article Marika, but where does your claim to eat upto 55 servings of raw fruit and veg come from? Also could you maybe confirm the size of a serving? If it is say the equivalent of aclementine, then that is much less than say a grapefruit. How many lettuce leaves count as a serving? and is that little gem or iceberg? What about the proven health benefits of eating cooked tomatoes? do they not count?
I'd love to see what you eat in a week Very Happy

PS Lori, don't be rude Shame on you

I'm pretty simple, and take a regular, over-the-counter, drugstore brand multi-vitamin every day. Works for me.

Yikes! 55 servings of fruits and vegetables! Vegetables are fine plus additional protein but too much fruit would lead to consumption of too much sugar (fructose) which is bad for you. You have to regulate fruit intake as well.

Mabsy, I think it is best if one takes a supplement with combinations of antioxidants because they all work synergistically, boost each other's potency and target not only one part of your organs or body system. There are multi-vitamins that target the skin but I think it's better if targets more than just that such as explained here:

Antioxidant Specialist

And according to this site Clove oil provides by far the most antioxidants (ORAC) with just one drop. Clove oil = Super Antioxidant

You can take all that green tea, grape seed, and ALA plus other AOs in just one capsule and I know for sure that all three you like taking are contained in NUTRILITE Antioxidant Complex.

Thanks eSquire415, I'll have a read of the links you posted.

Wow, 55 servings of fruit/veg! I'd also like to see a clarification on the size of the servings. I'm terrible with fruit particulalry, I had an apple a few days ago because I skipped breakfast and that was the easiest thing to eat and drive at the same time Embarassed That's pretty much my fruit intake for the week. I've got some kiwis (sorry Kiwigirl - "I have some kiwi fruit" Smile) in the kitchen and after reading this thread I'm thinking that today might be their unlucky day Bad Grin

Mabsy...are you serious? an apple a week?
You and marika go from the sublime to the ridiculous Laughing
In the UK the is a health campaign to get us to eat a minimum of 5 fruit/veg a day. A portion is about 2 tablespoons, an apple/orange or 2 satsumas - basically a good handful = 1 portion. I do about 6-8 a day and that is about 3/4 of my food volume. I can't imagine eating any more.
I do have a family member who eats only raw food. He has a belly like a gorilla, does turds so big they block the loo and doesn't look particularly healthy. Our digestive systems may be simelar to apes, but we are actually designed to eat meat as well as veg.

Laughing It'll take me a while to get THAT mental picture out of my head!

Yeah, I go through pretty bad phases when it comes to fruit & veg. However, I have been known to sit down and consume an entire watermelon or a whole bowl of apples (bowl not included). So it just varies. We do have a similar TV campaign here, obviously it needs to be a bit more effective Embarassed The main problem with me is that I get full very easily so I tend to place more importance on meat and fatty foods (my bad! I know!) because otherwise I'd lose even more weight and I really can't afford to do that!

Btw, what's a satsuma?

Hi Mabsy,
it's like a little orange. Easier to peel and it is a bit like tangerines, mandarins. OH I think I'll let Liz find a link for you. They are very nice.
Off of the subject. But Mabsy will understand. If I didn't know that he is not capable ie: totally pc phobic I would think that Mr Loopy has fixed the computer so that I can't access shopping carts. There by stopping me spending OUR money. LOL

I drink a green drink that you mix with water, juice, etc that is called Good N Greens. It really does make a difference in my hair and skin. I have tried other "green" drinks and some are so horrible I can't get it past my lips Laughing . When I can't find my one favorite green drink I use Emerald Greens, I think that's what it's called. I know it when I see it at my local health food store.

Why are you drinking the green formula when you can get them in capsules? Is that more effective? I wonder what it tastes like? I'm always afraid to taste a liquid that is green :-&

I drink a 'green drink' every day. It consists of juiced cucumbers, celery and mixed greens. It has made an enormous difference in my overall health. Not sure that counts as 55 servings though!! I couldn't imagine eating more than 3 or 4 servings of veggies per day. Ick.

I quess I could take capsules instead, I just feel that I'm getting more out of drinking it. You have to use a scoop which seems more then what would be in a few capsules, but I could be wrong. Yes I have tried that green drink and wow that is a great price. I can't remember if I liked it or not, might give it try again.

I used to drink Green Barley a while back (last year sometime). It's a green powder that you mix in with water and drink it up to three times a day. Injesting a tea spoon of this is supposed to be quivalent to consuming some large amount of veggies (can't remember how much). Obviously you're not getting much fibre though.

This is what I'm talking about: http://www.greenbarley.com/barley-green-kelp-nutritional-analysis.html In fact I still have some left (I bought a 1kg bottle Embarassed ) and I will have some tonight! Very Happy

Is that how the lettuce got the name "iceberg"??

FYI - I take a silica supplement for my skin. Actually, it's for my hair, skin and nails. In fact, you can find it at your local drugstore under "Hair/Skin/Nails supplements"! Duh-huh!! Smile This little wonder pill has done great things for my nails (which used to peel and split like you wouldn't believe) and helped my hair and eyelashes grow stronger and thicker. And my skin hasn't been this clear in years.

Yeah, I'm with the rest of you. I consider it a great accomplishment if I'm able to ingest the U.S. daily recommended 5-servings of fruits/vegs a day...ain't no way in hell I could down as many as Marika -- there aren't enough fruits or veggies that I actually LIKE to eat!!
