Hi Everyone!
I accidentally came across this forum a few months ago.. and "WOW" this is exactly what I am looking for!
I'm 31, have always had good skin, never really bothered with any kind of regime, until the last year when I noticed that it doesn't look as young, fresh and dewy anymore! As you can imagine, in my state of panic, I'm now trying every product to "redeem" myself for all those years of neglect and trying to reverse the early signs of aging!
I've never really come across Retinol before until I really started looking extensively into anti-aging products. After much research I settled on Skinceuticals 0.5 retinol serum. I've only used it twice, spaced out 3 days in between, and my skin was so sore and flaky I'm wondering if I had got it all wrong in the first place, and this is just a scam?? or am I missing something....? My face was so sore, I could barely cleanse or dry my skin, and definitely couldn't use toner! In addition, it was soooo dry and scaly, and in fact it made me look older than before I had tried it! I was wondering if the long term effects would reverse the aging process, but if it actually made you look OLDER for ages before you look younger, I was wondering whether it was worth it??
Anyone experienced something similar??

no, but retinol has proved to be too much for some people because it is strong. especially for those with sensitive skin.
you can try different types of retinoid! have u tried green cream? i am using SkinDoctor's Retanew now - encapsulated Retinol with Matrixyl 3000 |

Some people just cant use retinol. Are you already using any treatments with AHA?
Irritation, some times extreme, is a common side effect but if your face was sore I'd stop using all treatment products till it feels better. |

what you experiencing is a common side affect of retinol creams ,to minimize the discomfort try the following
1-use a gentler cleaner
2-use a moisturizer more often
3-apply after you night cream
4-apply it less often , ie every 3rd day after you night cream ,then gradually increase as you skin gains tolerance
5-ALLWAYS use sunscreen during the day , because the retinol will strip your own skin defences and make you more sensitive to sunlight
last don't expect results over night , you will need at least 3 month of nightly use before
collagen production help minimize wrinkles

Welcome to the forum, hipwuk.
I don't think your reaction to retinol cream is unusual, either. I had the same reactions when I used a 0.5 % retinol cream from PSF.
Still, I don't think you should give up the retinol. You can try to prep your skin with a moisturizer, wait a couple of minutes for it to absorb, and then apply the retinol cream. This method will dilute the concentration of retinol and hopefully don't cause major soreness.
You may also want to consider a less potent retinol cream like SkinMedica Retinol Complex. It contains both retinol and the less potent form retinyl palmitate in a delivery system that I believe is less likely to cause soreness and extensive flaking. I used it without any problems, and it's a good quality product that has received good reviews. |
