Hi, (firstly this is my first post and I have to say this is the BEST product review/ skin info forum I've ever seen, I am very happy to post q's and a's here).
I am using prescription micro retin-a 0.1% and its been like 4 days (i put pea-size amt on at night) and my skin is all red, flaky, and dry. And my mositurizer stings (benefit do it daily).
I have decleor ylang night baum and am using it during the day, but it doesnt really help make anything better, in addition to the fact I think I need neroli (another story).
Anyways, is this normal and when does it go away? I am out in the CA sun too, so imagine I should wear sunscreen.
Thirdly....can I exfoliate all the flakiness off? I use dr. brandt microdermabrasion in a jar.
Thanks, any input is greatly and kindly appreciated! |

to answer you q's
1- use a gentler cleaner
2- moisturize often
3- use more sunscreen than you think
4- don't let your skin get too red.. ie if it's irritating you too much back off a day or two
here is a helpful notepad from MUA on how to ease into retinoids :

ask for a lower strenght or leave out the moisturizer in your routine and see if it makes any difference. |

Not using sunscreen while using retin-a IS AN INVITATION for SKIN CANCER...
You started with a HIGH dose... I wouldn't use it every day. Maybe every third. Unless you are actively working on an acne problem... no reason to chap your face non stop.
The reaction you've created it totally normal... as it's a very aggressive set up you started.
You ARE already in the middle of a chemical exfoliation... hence the red skin, chapping, peeling.... You CAN gently, manually exfoliate... but if your skin stings and already feels bad, I would wait.
I haven't used the micro... hear it's awesome! Just go slow, no need to peel your face off in a day! |

My dermatologist advises me to start use Retin-A from twice a week to daily gradually. Stop at the time when your skin gets really flake. I am using Retin-A 0.1% as well. Sunblocker is a must. |

i am afraid you started with the hightest % and micro which is a very agressive approach.
my understanding that micro is a time-release formula, so any attempt on buffering might not work.
please, read mua posts - they are very educational.
here are the basics:
1) suncreen is a must. even in much colder climate, but especially in ca - please, be very dilligent and use high spf sunscreen. no spf15, which is a joke and a waste of money. imho
2) good moisturizer. not need for fancy or expensive. your old one, pre-retin-a might not work any more, so you might need to upgrate.
3) start slow. maybe every 2 days or so.
4) mix retin-a (less than a pea-size) with your moisturizer
5) very important to apply on dry skin only. wait for a long time (up to 1 hour), otherwise your skin will flake.
as always, listen to your skin, it will tell you what it needs. good luck and tell us what worked for you. |
