Is anyone else totally frustrated with how much anti-ageing treatments and products cost? The thing is, our grandmothers went through the ageing process without any way of turning back the clock - ageing was inevitable and accepted. However, these days we are bombarded with make-over programmes on TV such as "Extreme Make-over" and "10 Years Younger" in which participants are given totally rejuvenated faces by using all the modern technology that is available to us today. Helen Mirren (who is around my age) is getting allot of press lately on how great she looks for a women in her 60s - and she does. But honestly, how much work has she had done? She really looked her age in the "Prime Suspect" TV series, but since she's gone all Hollywood, she's definitely had work done.
And herein lies my problem - I just can't afford it and knowing it's there but unattainable is the root of all my frustration. My teeth are in dire need of work (my top teeth are capped and all need replacing, my bottom teeth are just plain old looking). I've had a number of quotes for this work and it's going to cost around AUD$40,000 - there's no way that I can afford that! Then there's the cost of fillers etc. I'd love to get my cheeks done, but that's AUD$1,800. I've stopped going to the hairdressers and now cut and colour my own hair just so I can afford to get Botox.
The worst thing about all this frustration on my part is that I know how superficial I'm being when I'm perfectly aware that many don't have enough food to eat and exist in poverty and war. I, on the other hand, live a charmed life by comparison. I do do my bit and support a World Vision child, but that doesn't make me feel better - I'm like the donkey with the carrot! Does anyone else suffer from the same kind of yearning? |

When I saw that thread title, I just knew you were behind it, even before I saw your name.. You never cease to crack me up..
Well we are in the same aging boat, with only a few days between our birthdays, but I refuse to feel your pain.
I'm having fun buying a few gadgets, making a few serums, and leaving the rest to nature and my good genes... (Lord knows with all the cigs, tans + wine I have under my belt, it's the 'genes' that have saved my arse.) Bless you Mama Bear!
Anyhoo, it's starting to catch up with me now, and I couldn't care less at this point. I'm figuring I'm still way ahead of where I could be at this point, so I'm not sweating it yet..
So far I haven't had any *help*, and it isn't in the plan, but who knows what the future will bring. Never say never, right? |

I knew you'd be the first to respond!! I really like the gadgets too, they make me feel that I'm pampering myself and doing the best that I can for just one initial outlay. At least I'm not forking out to go to the spa all the time. I also think that I'm holding up reasonably well, but I watch those TV programmes and read the cosmetic surgery magazines and immediately want everything done. I wouldn't get a face-lift, I'd just like some money to spend on fillers - but it's the up-keep that's a killer. I'd love to get my teeth done though - I think a beautiful smile does wonders for a face.
I'm also worried about the start of prune-like wrinkles around my mouth and the sagging around my jawline. That's why I'd love to get my cheeks filled out - it lifts everything up and makes you look perkier. Oh well, maybe I'll just go and have a few glasses of vino and count my blessings! |

Helen Mirren's pics are touched up, for sure! I saw a pic of her in a bathing suit where she really didn't have any cellulite, and then I saw a pic of her in something else where she did have cellulite!
Lesson: Don't trust your eyes with the glossies!
Keliu: I know this might be extreme, but what about dentures? I know a guy whose teeth I envied like crazy because they were so white-- I figured he must've had the latest and greatest laser whitening, and then I realized they were dentures!
Also, I stay away from mags like Architectural Digest because I end up spending money and wanting a new house and yearning for things I don't need. I stay a lot happier when I don't look at that stuff. But I do understand the yearning for the perfect bod and face and seeing stuff sag.
Kassy: that'll be enough from the fountain of eternal youth section. |

Never, never, never!! If I have to have dentures I'd shoot myself. I did have a plate with two front teeth on it when I was in my twenties and it was the most dreadful thing ever. It used to fall out all the time and food used to get trapped under it. That was why I ended up getting all my front teeth capped - but that was over 30 years ago. The dentist said that they all need replacing now. My original caps cost $4,000 so the price of new ones has increased a bit hasn't it? |

Keliu - I don't know exactly what work you need done on your teeth, but it sounds like a lot if you've been quoted Aus40,000. Have you considered getting it done outside Aus? It could be a lot cheaper
I know a REALLY good prosthodontist in Bangkok, he's been taking care of my teeth for years. Don't want to post his details as it's already hard enough to get an appointment with him, but suffice to say he's a professor at a Bangkok university, and quite well regarded internationally i believe, working out of a BKK private hospital, and his charges are around 25-30% of what I'd have to pay an average hack non-specialist dentist here in Hong Kong for the same work. I can PM you his details if interested.
The thai baht is still quite strong, god knows why, but even so if you're looking at spending Aus40,000, you could possibly have a nice holiday in Thailand for a couple weeks, get your teeth done, and still be way in front. |

Oooh, ooh, ooh, did any of you ever do the Blanche test from the "Golden Girls Show"? ... Now that's a real wake up call..
Take a nice size hand type mirror, lay it down on a counter, then bend over at the waist and have a looksie .... The older you are, the more horrifying it will be....
I just know you have all run off to do it, so c'mon back and share.. (misery likes company .. ) |

OMG - Avoid dentures whenever you can. There is NOTHING like natural dentition. And anyone in dentistry will tell you that.
I think the advice to avoid looking at the fake, manufactured, touched up and/or filled-botoxed elite in any magazine is a good idea. I also agree that money spent maintaining and polishing up the smile is worthwhile. And hey, a week or two in thailand - I'm almost ready to send a PM...
I saw a few celebrities in the real! and let's just say they do not resemble all the glossy photos.
I think we should all have the opportunity to have a professional photographer take pictures of us and do what they do to the celebrity photos. You would not believe how good you will look. |

That's a great idea and while you're at it, check out the prices of plastic surgery in Thailand. You can really get a lot of bang for your buck apparently.

Yep, an overseas jaunt is probably the most viable option. A friend of mine had ALL her teeth, top and bottom capped in Bali (yes Bali!) and the dentist did the most spectacular job. So much so her husband got his done as well. She said the dental surgery was completely state-of-the-art and all the work was done quickly and efficiently.
When it comes to magazine images, I know that these days you can't believe what you see. My frustration comes from just knowing that I could make some improvement if I only had the money to do so. I'd love to get the fat sucked out of my tummy and put in my cheeks!!
And Kassy, if you think I'm bending over any mirrors you're crazy, I only like to look in the mirror when I'm lying horizontal and staring up at it! |

Yes Keliu absolutely do not look at the TV or the glossies. I really don't even go there. It just gives us unrealistic expectations doesn't it.
A friend of mine "outsourced" her face lift to Costa Rica (she loved it and it cost her pennies compared to what she'd have paid in US); and her hip replacement to India (state of the art! and she was able to get a component that FDA (Food and Drug Administration - a US watchdog group whose funding comes 60% from Big Pharma - how unbiased is that?) is still haggling over. She said the care was excellent and the facilities absolutely first class.)
I think I would need to be braver to do this, or more motivated......which are you Keliu? =) |

Well, if I was left to my own devices, who knows what I'd get up to! My other frustration is my husband who is absolutely against me getting anything done - there's no way he's going to be funding any overseas cosmetic surgery trips. |

Just to give you some numbers for porcelain caps/veneers here in the US, my sister had 22 teeth done (11 upper and 11 lower) by a celebrity dentist in NYC for $50,000 USD. She could have done them locally for about half of that, but $25,000 USD is still WAY out of MY budget!
Maybe we can all go to Bali or Thailand together and get an EDS group discount! |

My friend paid AUD$11,000 for all her teeth to be done - that's a huge saving. We'll have to get working on an EDS Forum Members package deal!
I think my main source of angst is having fillers. I should never have started on that slippery slope! You get the fillers and feel rejuvenated - but then you become obsessed with watching them dissipate - your face becomes like a balloon that is slowly deflating which seems to actually accentuate the ageing process!! Seriously though, I think more clinics should offer incentive programmes to buffer the cost of constantly getting your face inflated. |

Keliu, you mean like a Frequent FILLER Program??
Have you tried facial exercise? I was on the fence about fillers again, after the lip fiasco, and I'm finding the exercises are helping overall with restoring facial volume and plumping out the lines. Just sayin. |

A Frequent Filler Program? - Absolutely perfect!! Love it!
As for facial exercise - why do I hate it so much - I don't know why, I spend hours doing everything else to my face. I have bought a Tua Viso and enjoy using that though - can't say I see any visible difference yet. |

Wow - Bethany - I sure hope Sister's teeth look amazing for that cash outlay! I've seen some beautiful work locally for almost a third of that - and I'm extremely particular about dental work - I can spot a crown at 100 paces. And a bad one is neon.
I agree with y'all - we need a frequent filler program - though - listen up Keliu - Since doing facial exercises I don't need filler!!!! And only $10.00 and 5-10 minutes a day. |

They look 100% like real teeth...my only thought (which I did NOT dare to verbalize) was that they actually did not look white enough. Her previous ones looked like white chiclets, so maybe that's why they look dingy to me. But if I had just spent that $$$, I would have wanted them one shade whiter. But apparently her dentist would not do that (or so she said). |

Keliu dear - I can feel your pain - is mine as well ...I have to redo all my teths.. 3 implants with bone graft...Only the implants+bone graft =15 000CAD ....and I have to do it .I started last year slowly with 6 front teths and they are looking good.Yes Beth they are not so white but for me the reason was that I am not doing everything at once so I didn't want such a big difference.I just can't understand why the price for dental procedure is so high here in America- Every where else - even in Europe seems to be better. My only explanation is because they can - and we are paying. It's ridiculose .... |
