I've recently bought a bottle of transparent spf30 sunscreen under L'Oreal's brand called Solar.
It seems to be good although I'd obviously prefer that it had an spf of 50-60 (the highest it seems to go up to is spf30.) It has 4 UVA stars with Mexoryl XL which should make it fairly reliable. What I don't know is how this translates to a PPD rating? Knowing the PPD rating would make me feel more comfortable with it. I think the LRP Fluid Extreme has a PPD OF 28. Does anyone know how I could find out without having to wait for a reply from L'Oreal?
For some reason I'm wary of the ease of this! The transparency aspect almost seems to be too good to be true! Most of the sunscreens (even LRP Anthelios) seem to bleach out my features and make me look strange until it absorbs after an hour or two. I've got used to the inconvenience and the belief that I have to suffer for the comfort of skin protection.
What do you guys think of transparent s/screens? Can they really be as reliable as the more opaque, high PPD ones? I'd love to know your thoughts. |

Just to add, this is also water resistant and the alcohol in it might sting around the eyes unless wearing contact lenses prior to application. |

Fortunately, I think this is the way most sunscreens will evolve. I did a product "rave" for NCN ProSkincare's "All Natural" sunscreen with Zinclear, totally transparent spf. I've heard more brands are going this way, and that they are equal to (if not better, because lots of them have antioxidants too) the thick pasty zinc oxide we wore on our noses as kids (or at least I did)! |

I do hope so, although L'Oreal's Solar is sadly lacking in antioxidant ingredients. There's nothing to stop the user from using an antioxidant serum underneath the suncreen however and I must admit I really like the reassurance of the having the so called 'photostable' protection of Mexoryl in it too!
The only problem I can forsee is that at present both the Ambre Solaire and Solar transparent s/screens have a high percentage of alcohol in them. You can both smell and feel it which isn't a real problem if you're an oil pot like me but after a while it may make the skin around the eyes & mouth a little dry and those with sensitive skins may suffer. |

I will have to check out your rave. I'm always looking for a better transparent spf that is easy to apply in the morning. |

Bump!
I'm shamelessly bumping this because I want other sunscreen users to know that totally transparent ones do exist.
If we demand transparency (or just less whiteness)in our sunscreens, perhaps the manufacturers will increase their investment in research and make one with less alcohol, high PPD and more antioxidants. I can dream can't I?
That said, I've discovered that the Solar one, adds a really nice sheen to legs as it's like a dry oil |
