A co-worker and I were talking about lunch and shopping earlier and the topic of jeans came up. Well, she bluntly told me I had a big butt and thighs. I'm not offended she told me this and I know I'm small but BIG in my lower half. But the fact that she pointed it out made it more real to me and now I'm feeling bad about myself now. What can I do to either cover up or help lose the weight?

Callanetics aims at toning, and building long lean muscles. It will not get rid of fat, but would reshape body in a nice way. You can start with Callanetics 10 Years Younger in 10 Hours: http://www.amazon.com/Callanetics-Years-Younger-Hours-Amazon-com/dp/B00064K0RI/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=dvd&qid=1249067855&sr=1-1
Do it for a couple months or so, and if you like it you can proceed to more strenuous programs. Exhale: Core Fusion - Thighs & Glutes (2009) rocks, but it is more difficult then original Callanetics.

I liked Callanetics when I did it. You may want to check the no lipo lipo thread as an adjunct to exercise.

Have you tried jogging for distance, luckylady? I know that running can really work well on the lower body. You also might want to check into any of Valerie Waters programs. It is basically a ton of lunges and higher reps, which will really help in slimming down the lower body.

One of the martial arts that focuses more on legs/kicks, rather than punches, will give a great lower body workout.. Maybe one of the korean styles, like tae kwon do? Tae kwon do classes with a good instructor will give you a real hard cardio workout, burning up the calories, and with all those kicks you'll be working your butt off, literally Smile

Plus, you're actually learning something useful as well as getting in shape

there's a good butt/thighs workout in Fitness that only takes 15 minutes a day -- that might be a good place to start and then gradually increase the number of reps...

Ew what appalling behaviour she displayed. I'm sure she's not perfect either. Try not to let that stuff get to you. Tons of people admire a generous behind. Um J-lo anybody.. People get butt implants for gosh sakes. Trying to be healthy is good but don't let your rude co-worker bother you.

Mmmm... I sort of have the same problem.

I have naturally big hips and thighs, which makes buying pants a pain because they're always big in the waist Sad

There are certain things that will help, I think:

a. Lose weight. If you're slightly overweight or something, try to lose it.
However, you might still end up with a somewhat big butt. Like for me... if I lose enough weight for my thighs and butt to be skinny... then I don't look good because my upper body is too skinny and my breasts shrink!

b. Consider liposuction for stubborn areas. Great solution!

c. Try to strengthen that area. Remember however, that when you do exercise you don't really lose fat "locally". So doing leg curls and running will help you lose weight in general (including the legs) and make your legs look toned, but it's not like you will lose fat specially from that area. You lose fat first from the area you accumulate last and so on.

Finally... if you're not overweight, and in good shape... don't worry to much about it! I don't know if you're married or attached, but just find someone who loooves your body shape. My husband, for e.g., really likes my body shape, so next time you can answer..."that's OK, my husband goes crazy about my curves" Very Happy

Maybe she is jealous because you are a pear shape and maybe she is an apple shape Very Happy .

I think that was very mean of her to comment on your body shape. She probably feels crappy about herself and just had to get in a little dig. Think of all the good things that you really like about yourself. If it didn't really bother you before she said anything don't let it bother you now. If you want to do something for "health reasons " whether it is a surgical procedure, a exercise program for your specific issue then go for it. But do it for yourself and don't let anyone make you feel bad about how you look. Life is to short for stuff like that.
