I was flipping through a magazine and there was an article about what you should spend a lot of money on skincare and what you should not.
For example: I buy cheap cleanser (Cetaphil) but I buy expensive eye cream (Skinceuticals eye gel/Cellcosmet eye contour)
How do you justify where you pay extra on skincare? |

I figure things that I wash off my face right away(cleanser) I don't have to splurge on. But any products with actives I would splurge on ... which is pretty much all the rest.  |

| I don't spend over $30 on any one product. I suppose I could be compelled to do so, but it would definately be a one time splurge. If I spend something like $70 it's on more than one thing! |

Justify?.... 
This is how it works for me.
1. Reads review on EDS
2. Tries to convince self that product is not required and indeed is too expensive (this works a little longer these days because I now have a mortgage)
3. Someone else posts a followup about how great the product is
4. Mortgage issues are forgotten. Eyes semi-close so as to not witness what is about to happen.
5. Hits "buy", shortly followed by "checkout" and "confirm".
6. Credit card statement arrives (hopefully AFTER the item already arrived)
7. Justification occurs automatically if product was good
8. Steps 1-7 are repressed from memory if product was bad.
Voila! |

If it really makes you feel good and more beautiful than before, your skin likes it and you believe it is improving your skin/hair etc then it is worth it.
No other justification is needed. |

I think this board's tastes have been getting more expensive of late. Now I know there have been reviews on the premium brands going back a long time, but I just feel there's a strong concentration of energy on the high-end brands right now.
A few months ago I felt PSF was the talk of the board, and I bought a lot of their products. And there was a time Skinceuticals, Dermalogica, and Dr. H/Jurlique shone, and now they've plateaued. Now I think there's a lot of focus being put on the (expensive) Swiss companies: Cellcosmet, Valmont, and to a lesser extent Juvena.
This is killing me. I just spent a buttload on ReVive eye cream (not thru EDS b/c wanted instant gratification), by telling myself that it's way cheaper than the Glacier stuff. I'm going to log off and hope soap and water is the next big thing.  |

| I am in school, and can ill afford lots of expensive products, but I'm 32, and am in need of a new skin routine. My mother (who tends to be rather conservative about these things) is surprisingly supportive of my quest. She told me that when she was about my age she made the decision to switch from drugstore brands to a more expensive line(clinique for her, which personally I cannot use) and that she feels that it was a fabulous investment and really helped her skin. She is 64 and her skin is beautiful - even tone, very few lines. So that's how I am justifying it - it is an investment in my future, and I don't want to look back and be sorry that I was stingy with my skin. Just my two cents worth! |

| RMB, I know what you mean by expensive tastes as of late! I've learned a lot about skincare recently and have revamped my whole routine - OCM, DIY DHCC, rosehip seed oil, DIY ylang ylang oil. My expenses on the skincare front have actually gone down but, MAN, reading all the great reviews for Valmont and Cellcosmet, it makes me really want to invest in a few fancy items!! After all if Mabsy likes it, it MUST be great!! |

I justify my purchases by telling myself I am not buying anything I don't really want or won't use. I've reduced the amounts of products I use to buy in the past and instead buy only a few really good items that I just love. This way, I'm not spending more. I'm just replacing quantity with quality. I do the same with all my other purchases too. I stay away from buying tons of useless crap and save my money so I can affrd "big" treats like better skin care, nicer car, travel, etc.... A little self discipline goes a lot further in the long run. I just need to remember this every time I'm tempted to try something new. LOL  |

| I just promise myself that I will not buy anything else until I've given the stuff I have time to see if it works. Then I read a review or walk past an Ulta or Sephora, and all the promises go out the window. (I should probably get a better lock for the window.) |

I agree RMB but what I do is check out the Bestseller list to help me make my decision. I never bought Bath & Body Works even though there was a hype about it in EDS. I have discovored that it has perfume in it and I know over long term use you can create sensative skin.
I have to admit that overall expensive skincare products are better then drugstore brands. I find that EDS Forum help us share our concerns and questions to help us make a better decision on what we should buy.
I am sad to see that Vivier lost it's popularity. I find it difficult to buy them at easthetics service stores and I was told by them that people just did not buy them. Maybe they were not that great afterall?
My goal is to try IS Clinical.
I want to be more realistic and go back to buying a cheaper (drugstore brand) of shampoo and invest in a good conditioner.
I'm just interested to see what other people would justify what is ok to go cheap on and what is ok to buy something expensive. |

| If EDS hadn't sent me that sample of the Renewing Pack some years back, I would have remained blissfully unaware of the Valmont range. And the Valmont disease spreads like a virus. Two of my female friends are also now afflicted |

Theres just some things one shouldn't scrimp on.
Shoes is one.My mom always told me to buy good shoes,because I'd need my feet to carry me through life.
Hair care products is another.Drugs store brands can be very harsh.You can purchase quality products at beauty supply shops for a few dollars more.And do your hair a world of good.
And when it comes to my face, I have to agree with above postings.If I think it makes me look better, then I feel better about myself, and everybody benefits! I've learned to research my products first,[thats why I love it here!],and if its expensive, but works, then it is well worth the price. And, it makes me feel special, and we all deserve that once in a while!

| lol the two things i splurge on and dont need to justify are beauty products and books. i dont really feel remoresful about spending so much on products unless they totally dont work |

That's so funny!
I'm the same way. When I see people raving about a certain product I can't help but want to try it myself. And things do seem to come and go. I'd bought a bunch of PSF when people were really talking about it and now my current "want" is IS Clinical. |

Vivier makes fabulous serums, if they are losing popularity then Vivier is at fault not because of the product but because of the international shipping restrictions they have put in place on online retailers. Actually, on top of that JB photos email I have to send today, the Vivier will be another one. I am really un-impressed with not being able to buy it because I live in Australia  |

I buy inexpensive cleanser (Green tea from MUAC) and inexpensive shampoo and conditioner (Thermasilk) and curl creme (Got2b curlvacious, yeah, its really cheap but works for me better than expensive stuff).
Everything else, I spend a fortune on, but truthfully, I'm happier with my cleanser and hair care products than anything else. |
