Has anyone ever tried a lotion mask as described in the book "Japanese Skincare Revolution" by Chizu Saeki? I haven't purchased this book but am seriously considering doing so. So, I'd love some feedback on the book, too, if you've read it. I've become interested in the lotion mask after watching the author demonstrate it and reading some blogs talking about it:

The only problem perhaps is finding the right cotton to use and the right lotion/toner.

I tried the lotion mask before and it worked well. My skin felt supple and smooth afterwards. But I think the cotton she used is difficult to find here.

In some Asian countries, the drugstore or cosmetics stores might sell the mask in dry form that you can add your own lotion to. The mask is already in the correct shape to fit your face. If you have a Kose counter, you can get those in tablet form from Kose and add your own lotion and the lotion will absorb into the mask and expand it. If you have Sasa stores, they also sell cheaper versions of the dry mask for DIY. That would save you having to cut up cotton rectangles to fit your face shape.

Thank you, mlrox. I did find the Kose lotion mask tablets but they seem kind of expensive if I'm going to do the mask everyday. On the other hand, I like that you put them in the cap and pour the lotion on them. That would seem to save on the lotion. I'm thinking about using one of the lotions from Shiseido The Skincare line, since they're alcohol-free. There are three but I'm confused about the difference between them. The ones I'm looking at are:

The Skincare Hydro Nourishing Softener

The Skincare Hydro-Balancing Softener

The Skincare Hydro-Refining Softener

They all say they're for normal or combo skin, which is what I have. Can anyone give me an opinion on these?

There's also one from the Kose Sekkisei line, but it has alcohol.

Any other suggestions?

Skippie, I'm not sure which would be the most suitable for you without looking at the ingredients and having some idea of your skin type. But...from the names, I am *guessing* that the Nourishing one is for dry skin, the Balancing one is for combination skin and the Refining one is for oily/blemished skin. You can ask the sales assistants to check on this. Actually the Kose Sekkisei lotion is very effective to brighten your skin IF you are not sensitive to alcohol and your skin is not dehydrated. It does give radiance to the complextion and is a very popular product here in Asia. I believe that Kose have come up with another version that's targetted towards mature/drier skin but I am not sure of the name.

Cheaper tablet masks can be purchased from SaSa (if you live in Asia).

You are right. DIY lotion masks from cleansing pads or whatever are a hassle. Not only do you have to spend time peeling the layers of cotton and "assembling" the mask on your face but you also have to wash the container that you used for spraying the mask. I don't see myself doing this every day.

I have to confess to being a fan of SK2 Facial Treatment Essence (expensive habit). I have mature skin and it works for me. I use a very thin but wide cotton pad and press it against my skin for some seconds before moving to another area of the face. By leaving it a few seconds on the skin, more of the essence soaks in and less is wasted on the pad. The pad is pretty dry by the time I've finished "pressing" it all over my face. I'm usually a zombie in the morning and really can't face assembling the lotion mask.

I like lotion mask, you also can DIY. AWAKE has the paper mask, you can add lotion and the mask will pop-out. It's really good.

I agree - both the author and her model have lovely skin. And Saeki's hands are amazing. I believe she is 66 years old, although I don't know if that's when she made the video.

neondaze, the book is well worth buying in my opinion. And I love the lotion mask. It's the best thing I've ever done for the overall texture of my skin. My skin is looking plumper for one thing and it just looks more refined. My pores - and I have large pores - are pretty much nonexistent.

Yes I was really struck by her hands too. They could easily belong to a 20-30 year old. Most people who look young in the face are given away by their hands.

Doesn't the success of the treatment depend on what particular lotion you apply to the cotton pads. I don't understand why she doesn't recommend what ingredients should be in the lotion.

IMHO the point is you can choose whatever lotion that suits your needs.

Here's specifically what she says about the lotion:

A key part of my skincare program is the lotion mask. Though involving only lotion, water, and cotton, it works miracles. Lotions-not to be confused with toners or astringents-condition your skin surface. There are basically two types: hydrating lotions and brightening lotions. The ingredients are typically 80% water and 10% alcohol, along with an assortment of moisturizing agents and therapeutic ingredients. I strongly recommend only those lotions that contain little or no alcohol.

The NARSskin Hydrating Freshening Lotion is the only one she lists as an example. I looked at Japanese skincare lines to see if I could find a hydrating lotion and settled on the Shiseido lotion for now. But I'm sure there are other lotions that can be used, probably some that are cheaper. Kassy has a DIY recipe that I'll probably incorporate as soon as I get the ingredients.

She also suggests using the lotion mask while taking a bath. She says to cut holes in a shower cap and put over your face & lotion mask. I tried this last night but had trouble because of the pieces of cotton. I think this would definitely work better with a one piece mask, such as the Kose tablets or the other tablets mentioned above.

I'm still not understanding the concept of this - aren't all commercially available sheet masks meant to be hydrating? I have no problem with the DIY aspect of this, I love making my own lotions and potions but it does seem allot of effort to go to when sheet masks are so convenient.

I'd really like to know exactly why this particular concept works miracles and what the therapeutic ingredients and moisturising agents are in her lotion.

I looked up the Nars Hydrating Freshening Lotion and it is essentially what we would call a toner. So basically, this is a method for applying a toner - that's why she recommends one that doesn't have alcohol.

I just searched for the Olay mask US as well and got the same results as you, maybe Amazon.com or Ebay but even the Olay official site didn't show it? I never understand why they do this!
