THICKENERS. Hi. I recently tried my hand at a making a thick cream (almost a paste) with a vegetable shortening base, and some powdered proteins & amino acids. I need to make it thicker, with something that is compatible, odorless, colorless (could be white or a light natural color), safe for the environment, tolerant to temperature variation (especially heat)and will have a shelf life of at least one year (after mixing). Does anyone have ideas on the best thickener to use? Thanks |

Xanthan Gum is an all natural thickener that can be used in cooking and so in DIY recipes it is an off white powder that really thickens. You can find it in Health Food stores (make sure it is 100% pure) or at most DIY suppliers, one I know that carries it is:

also might try:

miss anna,
I agree it is safe enough to eat so it is a great natural thickener in my book!
