My sonicare finally died. I've had 3 sonicares over the past 10 years. DH & I both use it so I think about a 3 yr life span each is pretty good.

I'm trying to decided if I should get another sonicare or an oral-b. I'm been trying research but it seems the bottom line is that they are both effective. Any thoughts?

I've used both. I definitely prefer the Sonicare because the head of the Oral-B is smaller and round with fewer bristles, so it wears out faster. The cleaning action on the Sonicare somehow feels more effective too, although that's purely subjective. Smile

I've had an OralB for years and would recommend it purely because the head is so small. It gets in around the teeth better than a larger head.
My dentist also stated that both are effective, but the smaller head is preferable for the reason mentioned above.

I also have used the sonicare for about 8 years and only have to replace the heads. My son has both but likes the sonicare much better.I think it does a better job on the gum area.

I'm a dental hygienist and I swear by the sonicare.
The bristles rotate microscopically 10,000 times per second. Not only that, the ultrasonic frequency creates a sound that bursts the cell walls of the harmful bacteria in your mouth. So it is actually cleaning surfaces that it isn't even touching. Any of the rotary brushes cannot compare, inferior products really. My vote - sonicare.

SandraD4880 - thanks for your input as a dental professional. I had no idea how effective the sonicare really was.

I use the Sonicare too, my dentist recommended it. I really like it a lot and could kick myself for not using it sooner in life. Smile

Not to detract from the OralB if you're happy with it, but in case you did want to switch to Sonicare they do have tiny 1/2 size brushes you can get.

I've got both Sonicare and Oral B Pulsonic at the moment. Have used Sonicare for years, but recently got the Pulsonic to try.

Was puzzled at first by comments from others that they preferred Oral B for its smaller brush (I like a small brush too). I've got small brush heads for my Sonicare but can only get one size (large) for the Oral B Pulsonic. I guess availability differs depending where you live. Here I can get Sonicare brushes in two sizes, but the Pulsonic is only available in the larger size.

Anyway I still prefer my Sonicare, possibly because I can't get small brush heads for the Pulsonic. But I always take the Pulsonic when travelling, as it's much smaller and lighter to pack. I think, from memory, the Sonicare battery when fully charged supposedly lasts longer than Pulsonic, but I've taken the Pulsonic on 4-5 day trips without lugging the charger as well, no problem.

Can't find it online any more, but I have an Ultrasonex (on my second one). I'm sure I read elsewhere that the larger heads are more effective. From all the reviews I've seen, my next purchase will probably be the Sonicare.

And I've had lots of fillings in my lifetime..with the Ultrasonex my teeth are white, bright and no fillings since I bought it. (Chocoholic Embarassed)!

I have been using a Phillips Soniccare with my boyfriend and love it because there is an attached UV Sterilizer with it. Only down part is that after a while, [my] brush heads don't want to stay on and vibrate off. However, this never happens to my boyfriend. I maybe pushing them on incorrectly or something. Think

I teach Periodontal medicine and Preventive dentistry and either the Oral B or the Sonicare are great. I have found that people gravitate toward one or the other. As I tell my students - It's all about proper usage. The greatest tool in the world is only great if you know what to do with it.
I personally like the Sonicare. The small brush head on the Braun is nice but ONLY if you know how to use it properly. You need to adapt it more artfully than the Sonicare - it has more potential to miss areas otherwise.

Always hold the head of either product at a slight angle to the gum surface (vs straight on) when you use at the gumline. Very important.

I'm with you on that. I have had to get a lot of cosmetic fillings from over aggressive brushing with reg toothbrushes.

After I got the sonicare I never have eroded my teeth again, and my vote def with sonicare. It's like getting your teeth cleaned every day almost.

Also........hehe....I keep the old brush heads because you can attach to the handle and use to polish jewelry etc...or is that gross?

Even though I work in a dental office, I haven't had a professional cleaning in a long time. So on my lunch break, I gave myself one in the mirror using the cavitron. I had no plaque, calculus or stains and did not bleed at all.

My point - I brush using the sonicare 2-3 times daily. I floss and use ACT at night as well. I didn't even need to give myself a professional cleaning because my daily method cleans perfectly.

And yes, sistersweets is spot on. About 45 degree angles into your gumline with the softest pressure. I tell that to my patients. It horrifies me when they say they just brush up and down!

I had a sonicare for years, but when it quit working I bought an Ultreo tooth-brush. It is supposed to work by using ultrasound waves??

I like it , but it is a pita to buy the replacement heads. It cost me a crazy amount of money to get the heads from the US.

I had originally purchased it on theshoppingchannel in Canada, but of course they no longer carry it.

I will be looking to replace it soon due to this fact. Smile

OR the worst - Back and forth scrub brush style.

The sonicare really does make a difference and I clean my own teeth too Sandra Laughing

I have used the OralB for about 15 yrs. I like the little round head. That is the only reason I haven't tried Sonicare - the shape of the head.

Nothing wrong with an ORAL-B. My classes get a free one of this and Sonicare and it's interesting how the students tend to have a "favorite". I used an ORAL B for a long time and my parents have them also. A few years ago I started with the Sonicare - I guess I figured I should give equal time.
It's all in how you use it. Some people are more comfortable with a standard type toothbrush head which the Sonicare provides. They don't *get* the round head idea - which is actually nice because you can adapt it better in some areas than a regular brush head.
Personally I just love powered toothbrushes. You can brush for 10 minutes with a regular brush and never duplicate the results in terms of brushing quality. Plaque is a very tenacious and sophisticated matrix. The bacteria even talk to each other. Crazy, Huh!

I have stuck with the Oral B on the recommendations of my dentists and hygienists (moved and switched) because of a small jaw size, same with my kids. I was told I could reach around and behind with a small headed brush and would have more problems keeping those hard to reach areas nice and clean with a larger one. Smile

Yep - good for the small, tight areas so long as it's used correctly. Smile

As another dental hygienist I just have to chime in and say that I agree with sister sweets. The brush is only as good as the user and requires good adaptation. My complaint about Sonicare is it does not last like the original Sonicares made by Optiva (prior to Phillips buying them out in 2000)Many of my clients first handles charged well for 5-7 yrs. Now I have seen time and time again that many (not all) will start to power down after 2-21/2 yrs and all of a sudden my clients with a stable routine have more plaque and bleeding. Once I recommend a new brush they notice the difference right away and ofcourse the next time I see them they are better if they purchase a new one. I also noticed (and was confirmed by a Sonicare rep) that if a user was very aggressive with their grip and scrubbing motion then they will initially cause faster erosion at the gum line and then wear the brush out so it not as effective sooner.
I still recommend Sonicare but I like to inform my clients on its qwerks.

Hello there and welcome.
Great to see some dental professionals on board here. I've been holding the dental fort by myself for a while. Sandra came on just a bit ago. Smile

I was given a new sonicare two years ago by the rep - new model with UV light and used it for less than a year and it went kappoey on me. Crying or Very sad The rep came to see me and I mentioned it - they had a revamp and they sent me yet another new Sonicare. So far, so good. I'm hoping the other was just a glitch.

One thing I've noticed is that the brushing action decreases significantly when it is time to change the brush head - amazing that this can make such a difference. Sometimes the bristles, etc seem fine..yet over time it seems to decrease in effectiveness and it is not noticeable until you put the new brush on and Wowsa...

I bought one for the BF but he's in love with his Oral-B - very meticulous man in every way. The new sonicare is in his closet. Confused Truly I don't care, just glad he is a devoted brusher and flosser. Razz

I have to agree with comments about the Sonicare dying after a couple of years, max. I'm on my third.. or is it the fourth? I do love my Sonicare, but I'd love it more if it lasted longer.

Anyway, I'm pretty happy with my current two brush system, Sonicare for home and Oral B Pulsonic for travel. Will be interesting to see how long the Pulsonic lasts, as I've only had it a few months.
