I have been reading alot here on EDS and have seen oils and essential oils mentioned quite a bit. BUT I am confused about them in regards to both hair and skincare.
I see coconut oil , argan oil , and macadamia nut oil mentioned when talking about hair; Avocado and Emu oil mentioned when talking about skincare ; and then essential oils such as grapefruit and lavender . I also read essential oils shouldn't be applied directly to skin...
So I'm confused.
Is there a difference between essential oils and the other oils mentioned ( such as emu or avocado) or are they all essential oils just used in different ways?
And how do you know what can be applied directly to your face or hair and what has to be diluted or mixed in a base? |

Every essential oil sold will be listed as such, the oils listed in the first part of your post are regular botanical oils. Essential oils will be diluted into a carrier oil and not applied directly to the skin with a very few exceptions. I would suggest doing a little reading at a few sites that will help you understand the difference. First one sells both kinds of oils and second essential oils only I think it will really help clarify.

Thanks all I now have an good understanding of the difference. I had no idea essential oils could actually be dangerous if not used properly !
I think I will just stick to some of the recipes I found here on EDS for skin and hair mixes/mask. I'm not ready to try on my own yet
Thanks again |

Tia,
I use them all the time, I think if you decide to make any oil blends buying a good book on the subject is great, it really helps to have a reference. I must have about 6-7 books dealing with essential oils. |

Thanks DarkMoon
If I decide to try any mixes on my own I will definitely get a book first. I had heard about essential oils but never put much thought into it until reading here on EDS. |

I am a book lover, it's just easier to have quick reference to what is good for what and what to watch out for. I really enjoy my little oil blends! |

I am a book lover as well. I know electronic has huge benefit - and trust me, I wish the internet had been invented when I had to do term papers! But to me, nothing compare to the tactile feeling of an actual book in my hands.
I'm new to the DIY and essential oil world. I'm trying to find a good reference book, but most of the ones dealing with essential oils focus on aromatherapy rather than topical use. Do you have any recommendations? I'm open to ideas broader than just essential oils as well. |

I have one from way back which I still refer to: The Fragrant Pharmacy by Valerie Anne Worwood. It used to be the staple reference found in every essential oil store. I'm sure there are very many others now. |

Careful with essential oils... many of them can be irritating to the skin. I know lavender oil caused me to have strange flesh-like bumps |

Lavender oil is unbelievable! I think its the most popular oil and is incredibly soothing and balancing when used properly. Its also one of the most powerful with its healing properties being pretty far-reaching... I often wonder why people feel the need to use eo's like tea tree when lavender is way more yummy smelling and very effective when it comes to its antibacterial/antifungal properties.. heals wounds, burns, helps with acne etc... all when used properly, of course.
It can be used neat (straight) onto wounds and burns (left my dark skin without scars which is saying something!), but it isn't something you'd normally apply directly to skin. You need to mix just a couple of drops to larger quantities of carrier oil. |
