It's been a while since I reviewed a product on this site, so here goes.

This review is for the DEvita Ultra Solar 50 sunscreen. Devita sunscreens do not have official spf ratings, which is why there is a # but no spf. The product has micronized zinc oxide as a protector and supposedly no chemical sunscreen agents.

The texture is light and almost feels like it's "whipped" and feathery. The color is pure white. I find it bizarre that when I apply it, it stings my eyes quite badly for about a minute, and then sets a bit oily, like a chemical sunscreen does, although I checked with the company and they claim that they do not use chemicals in their sunscreens. I place a dusting of Amazing Cosmetics' Velvet powder over the top to diminish the shininess. I have not broken out from this sunscreen and like very much that it goes on completely clear, leaving no white residue.

I have been using the product for about a month now, as the weather has turned better in Chicago. I have to say that I do not think that this sunscreen protects adequately enough from the sun. I use a heavy duty sunscreen for when I'm outside for more than 30 minutes*, so I've only worn this for incidental exposure (includes walking to the bus/car, walking between buildings, indoor exposure, etc.)
I'm pretty tan on my face and my cheeks have acquired that rosy glow that looks so good but is so bad for your skin long term!

I'm giving this product a thumbs down because it really doesn't do what it is supposed to do.

Am open to recommendations as to what sunscreen to replace it with!

* a heavy duty sunscreen that is tried and true and that I know protects my skin because I've worn it at the beach and stayed pale! Nia24 sunscreen, Skinceuticals, Keyes, and/or Jane Iredale Dream Tint are my current faves, but usually I wear the NIA when jogging.

I too, have stinging sensation in my eyes when I use this product but I'm not sure if it's because it has migrated into my eyes after applying too close to lash line, or if it's bc of 'fumes' entering my eyes. Both the 50 and the 30 do this to me but the 50 is worse.

I have yet to determine whether it is providing adequate protection or not. I've been out in 90+ direct sunlight here in TX on at least 2 occasions and came back with a red face. I haven't yet figured out if I'm just hot and flushed or if I've suffered sun damage bc I'm on Obagi and my face is red to some degree all the time. The redness after sun exposure lasts for a couple of hours but my face is never swollen, tender, or hot like a sunburn would be.

I like the 30 for everyday use with minimal sun exposure but not sure I would use outside for extended periods. The 50 is very greasy on me and the stinging lasts several minutes. Since I'm doing Obagi and can get super dry during the day, I think the greasiness reduces the flakiness. I'll continue to use but once I finish Obagi and/or when the dryness goes away, not sure I will continue or repurchase the 50.

Thanks for the review. I've been wanting to try this but have lots of mixed reviews on it. I think I'm going to pass on this one. Its too bad it didn't provide decent protection for incidental exposure.
