? I heard using the pure Vit E oil from the capsule helps with acne scars on face or scars on your legs. Anyone try and it works? |

I was in a car accident almost 20 years ago and received multiple lacerations and abrasions to my face that require stitches. I applied vitamin E to them but not on the ones anywhere else on my body and didn't really see a difference. I only applied for a few weeks though. I would guess that improvement, if any, would come after months of application. I just couldn't stand all that oiliness on my face. |

From what I have read its no longer recommended to use Vit E to prevent scars because its not that effective and there are better options to use.
I have personally tried it and did not see any difference. I have also used mederma and it was not effective.

The pharmacist told me stuff with silicone is supposed to help with scars.
I also just saw stuff with garlic extract that is supposed to help (but have not tried as I amnot sure if it smells?
I am actually looking for something to help with some very bad scars on my arm from surgery.
Since silicone is supposed to help, I guess I'll try using my smashbox primer samples,since i hate that on my face...
I wonder if there is a difference with the expensive silicone gels and the cheaper one for womens stuff that people are using on their face?
I forget the brand of it,but it is from the drugstore. |

i use Mederma scar removal gel. You can get it from pharmacy/drug stores. It worked for my pimple scars and discoloration. Takes a while but you have to be consistent with applying it daily. After about a week or less, you will see the part of your skin peeling. After a few more times, you old skin will peel off totally and new skin will cover the area.
It helped my small spots/discoloration. Try it. It's not costly to boot! |

Some time ago I posted on another thread about scar removal with silicone pads, Scar Marks Anyone??:

I have a pitted scar on my hand. Two doctors, one derm and another one plastic surgeon, recommended me to apply silicone pads on the scar. I started applying those pads one month after the tissue that resulted in light red (or dark pink) scar was removed. The doctors said that healing takes long time and it was not late to start using silicone pads.
My primary concern is the color of the scar, I did not want to have dark pink spot on my fair skin. It has been two months now since I have been applying pads, and the spot is much lighter. It will take at least several more months if not more to make it close to condition I want it to be.
I use Johnson&Johnson First Aid Advanced Healing Adhesive pads. The pads are large, and I need just a small patch. I cut those pads into small pieces, and use those small pieces.
The drawback of silicone pads that they should be applied at least 12 hours a day. I keep them almost for 24 hours a day, and replace old ones with new ones. On a plus side they do work although slowly. .... |

mpstat - it's interesting to hear that your doctors recommended silicone gel/sheets on pitted scars and that you found it helpful.... |
Hi Septembergirl The doctors recommended specifically silicon pads. The derm thought that the results were due the compression that pads provide, because skin is sort of glued (like to band-aid) to the flat surface of the pad, and somehow that compression is responsible for the way scars heal. There is no consensus on explanation of silicone pads effectiveness. It seems that silicone pads work on both pitted and raised scars. |
A small scar on my hand now is normal skin color, silicone pads worked well for me. Took long time though... |

You can get it in your local drugstore like Walgreens
Description
* 3.0 x 2.25 in.
* Sterile.
* Advanced care.
* Faster healing than with an ordinary bandage.
* Minimizes appearance of scars.
* Helps minimize pain.
* With Compeed Moisture Seal Technology.
* For small to larger minor wounds.
* Johnson & Johnson First Aid brand Advanced Healing is a flexible and absorbent material that acts in place of a scab and encourages fast, natural healing.
* Faster Healing than with an Ordinary Bandage:
o This unique pad is clinically tested, and proven, to allow for faster healing than with an ordinary bandage.
o Designed to stay on for several days, the pad acts like an instant scab to seal in your body's own natural healing fluids and to seal out water, dirt, and germs that can cause infection.
* Minimizes Appearance of Scars:
o A scab may leave behind a noticeable change in the appearance of healed skin, commonly know as a scar.
o By preventing scab formation, Advanced Healing helps minimize the appearance of scars.
* Helps Minimize Pain:
o The Advanced Healing pad absorbs excess moisture to form a white gel cushion over the wound.
o The gel cushion provides protection from bumping and maintains moisture balance.

* Leave the pad in place for several days for optimal healing.
* The Advanced Healing pad comes with its own adhesive so no tape is needed.

jumbosstar42 - you can cut a larger piece into small pieces. I cut it into about 1 cm by 1.5 cm pieces for my scar, and a pack of silicone pads lasted ages. Although I applied the pads for months and months (they take long time to work), but went through just a two or three boxes of pads. For larger scars one would need larger quantities. If you can not find them in your country, you should be able to order those on internet from US. |

hi thanks for your advice. Just need to know did you use them on pimple marks/discoloration and took months to heal? If it is so, then Mederma might be faster... I think mine took 1-2 months to fully disappear. Within 1 month, it would fade quite a bit already. |

jumbosstar42 - I had a pitted scar (a spot on my hand was removed) and used the pads for a dual purpose healing and discoloration with discoloration being the primary one. Both surgeons did not have a high opinion about Maderma, and recommended pads that supposedly heal with suppression.
The same spot was removed on several occasions with a couple of them being unsuccessful, and initially I tried to use Maderma without results. The last attempt was successful, with silicone pads returning color back to normal. |

I don't think Vitamin E supplement does much for scars. Vitamin E lotion might be helpful, but it did not work for me personally, as it made my skin oily. |

Definitely Vitamin E helps in reducing the appearance of scars though it takes time but if you apply regularly then its results are really good and it also helps with dryness of the skin! |
