Any time I have used sunscreen I break out and get these extremely itchy bumpy patches on skin. Especially near my jaw line and cheeks.
I think I must be allergic to something in it. Has anyone else had this problem and if so have you found a product that works for your skin? I went into SDM the other day becausd after doing some reading I thought I'd try a zinc base ss and was shocked that they had absolutely no zinc based products available.
Anything they had was titanium dioxide, avobenzone etc. which I think are causing the reaction so I guess any recommendations I do get I'll be going to Sears or the Bay which sucks because they are so expensive but I need one so I have no choice. Please help! |

Hi moonshyne -
As I mentioned in the other thread, try a physical sunscreen. I've used Badger, which has zinc oxide, but it is pretty thick and greasy. You can order it from drugstore.com. The Blue Lizard Sensitive has both zinc and titanium. The Marie Veronique has zinc and a bunch of nice other ingredients, but it is more expensive than the others.
Or maybe try mineral makeup? |

I have also always reacted to sunscreens (more on my body than my face though, but it sounds like the same itchy bumps), so I know how tricky it can be to find one that works. Since I work indoors, I usually just rely on my mineral makeup for to and from work sun protection (Pur Minerals from Shoppers Drug Mart or Everyday Minerals available online - she has try me kits, which are great, and very quick and reasonable shipping to Canada). For extended periods of time outdoors I use Clinique City Block for my face and it's been great - it's a tinted physical sunscreen. I recently bought Heiko Kids from Pharma Plus for my son, who is also very sensitive to sunscreens, and it seems to be working great for him. Because it's physical it does have a slight white cast, so I don't know if I'd want to put it on my face, but he's 4, so it doesn't really matter.
If you have a health food store or a "natural" baby store (that sells cloth diapers and such) near you, they may have some physical sunscreens too. |

| Thank you so much for these suggestions. I never knew mineral make up acted as a sunscreen so I might try that and I like the idea about checking the local health food stores for a sunscreen. I hope I luck out and find something my face likes. |

| Some sunscreens may clog pores. The breakouts near jaw lines and cheek sounds like the ss is not washed off thoroughly at those areas. Sometimes you need a makeup remover to remove sunscreens. |

Can you get "Invisible Zinc"? It's an Australian product but think it has gone worldwide.
I am also sensitive to sunscreen but the Cosmedix one works for my face and a Neutrogena sunblock for my body. |

Hi Moonshyne:
I have the exact same reaction when I use chemical sunscreens. Three I have found that are chemical-free and work pretty well are Devita, Burnout and Keyes Solar RX. The Devita is fairly moisturizing so I use it in the winter. The Burnout (sensitive skin one) is great for me in the summer because it doesn't exacerbate my oily skin. The Keyes solar RX used to be my HG sunblock but there is tumeric oil in it and recently it has been causing my skin to get really irritated so I had to stop, but many of my friends swear by it.
Sorry for such a long post, but for the last couple of years I have been on a serious hunt for the best physical sunblock. Good luck |

I had ugly lesions after using a chemical sun block. Never again: it took over a month to clear.
I now use a physical sunscreen, made in Canada, called pure+simple, that I get from their site pureandsimple.ca I phoned in my order because I didn't want to order online.
You can also get it from Nanci at NCN in the States.
I've had absolutely no problems. they have a different formula depending on skin type. |

I am going to be trying the Burnout brand, found it for 13.99 on mother nature website. Hope it works for me. I'll be ordering both the kid and clean and clear ones. I'll update when I get them and let you know how it goes. Thanks again for the feedback, hopefully Burnout works well for me and my two toddlers
I use Coppertone WaterBabies but I hate the overwhelming smell of it plus the main thing is even despite my very generous applications with it, my kids still got slightly burned! And it's supposed to be SPF 50+. we were only out for 2 hrs that day (but the sun was very strong) and I slathered the stuff on them but they burned arrgh hope the burn out works A LOT better on them! (and me ) |
