Hi,
I have wanted to try IPL treatment for ages. I have some broken capillaries and some pigmentation which bother me. Tried lots of creams but nothing helps the capillaries..
So I decided to have some IPL treatments, I was booking for my usual botox, and booked IPL as well. The doc thinks my skin show respond excellently as I am really pale skinned.
It was great cos they actually had a special offer that ended this week which I didn't know about when I booked! It was abit ouchy, but nothing unbearable, he recommended treatments about 2-3 weeks apart. This clashes with some events I have coming up in 2 and 3 weeks time, so he said he would 'upt' it abit this time, and then have another one in about 4 weeks.
He told me to expect darkening over the next few days.. properly at worst at about day 3?
I was a tiny bit tingly straight afterwards, like a very very slight sunburn. Today nothing? I'm not sure what to think?? I don't know if its my imagination but I think my capillaries are faded somewhat!!!! One tiny dark spot on my left cheek and thats it so far.
Waiting to see what tomorrow brings..
I just thought I would share my experience with everyone and would welcome anyone else's experience's..

Hello Bermie. your first day's reaction sounds a bit like mine. Here's what I posted on another thread ...
"I had IPL treatment a few years back. My skin was very 'freckled' after spending too many years in the sun as a young girl. The IPL process wasn't painful, but my skin was bright red for a few hours after the treatment. Two days later I noticed the freckles getting darker and by day four I looked like someone had thrown mud at me. Within a week, the black spots started disappearing, falling off probably, and by day 9 I had a freckle-less face. I go back for a 'touch-up' treatment once every 18 months or so for a few stubborn sun-spots and to get the little spider veins zapped off that pop up next to my nose sometime. I have also had the backs of my hands treated with great success."
I am VERY impressed with IPL, and it is not as expensive as I thought it would be. |

Your experiences sound similar to mine. I think it works best in a series (2-3 usually) and does really help with broken caps and hyperpigmentation.
I also agree that touch ups are necessary if you want to maintain the results. |

Thanks for the replies. Yeah the doc did say properly at least 2 treatments before I notice anything, but then he said he 'upted' it!! for this one.
I can't wait to see some results, I will post how I go.
thanks again |

I really want to try the IPL also. I think it could be great for my skin and yet I have read so many posts about women with fat loss because of it I get scarred. I dont know how common this really is though? |

Hi,
I had IPL recently . i only had one and then a free tough up 3 weeks later. it hurt!!my freckles darkened somewaht and fell off in a few days. not all of my freckles responded but they are pretty light and i don't have many. i mainly went for capillaries. they responded well around my nose. my capillaries actually turned dark purple and then faded . they are much less noticeable now. my skin in general is much clearer. i am happy with it overall |

The ipl for me has been by far the best treatment for the money, when in the proper hands.
I think they have found recently, that the results are just as good on lower settings, rather than higher settings which result in the skin swelling and stretching.
I have had over 6 now and have never had a fat loss, just extreme swelling from too high of settings in the very beginning, over 6 years ago.
The two most recent have been perfect. |

do you think this would produce the same results as well as someone who uses the obagi system? |

Thanks for sharing your experiences! I have other health issues I'm dealing with right now but when I have those taken care of I'm going to get the IPL done. I called around and found a place that charges less if you get 6 treatments.
Keep us updated on how your doing Bermie! |

Mmmmmmmmmmmm...
ok, today is day 4 since my IPl treatment and I abit confused. I have had no darkening or other marks (having said that I have one tiny tiny dot on my left cheek which is really not noticable!) and I was expecting lots of darkening as I have a fair bit of pigmentation.
The doc did say he would concentrate on the capillaries for the 1st treatment which I do think have faded a little? But I think I am disappointed. My skin looks a little more even toned but I honestly don't know if I am imagining it! I have a charity dinner dance in 10 days and I am tempted to try to fit another session in before then? Although he did say 2 - 3 weeks between sessions.
anyone else have no darkening or marks whatsoever?? |

sorry, just noticed I didn't answer your question..
the only product I have tried from Obagi was the one for pigmentation, couldn't stand it, it was far too drying for my skin. Can't remember the name of it?? I would much prefer IPL, just my opinion.
never heard of the fat loss thing? so can't help there. |

I have never tried Obagi so I can't answer that.
I have had times when my skin made no change whatsoever. I get all disappointed like nothing happened. (Probably because I get all worked in fear before that my face is going to really swell and bruise). But then my hubby or someone will tell me how good my skin tone looks and I notice that all of the little spider looking ones are gone.
So what I have begun to think is that the more I have done, the lesser my bruising, swelling and dark spots are as there is less to treat and it is more about maintenance.

well today is day 5 and still nothing!
I think I will give them a ring tomorrow and see if this is normal?
I keep looking in the magnifying mirror but really can't notice anything...maybe my face looks alittle 'dirty'?? or that could just be my imagination too..lol
I'm wondering if I ring them would they do another session so soon (and for free!)as I don't think there is any difference? I'm confused.. |

Well, I had my 2nd IPL treatment yesterday. My original doc did this one (she was off the last time and her partner did the first one).
It hurt! She spent alot longer and also did my whole neck!
Afterwards I was pretty red and felt hot but didn't look too bad. After a couple of hours the face had cooled but my neck looked very red.
Woke this morning and got a bit of a shock! My face is pretty swollen, especially one side, left cheek very swollen and under my eye, looks like someone punched me! Lots of dark spots too and the capillaries are darker looking. I look like someone splashed me with mud..lol
There has definately been a 'reaction' this time. Had to wear sunglasses today when I went out as under my eye is very noticeable. I have been googling and this all seems pretty common. Just wondering how long it will last. I don't really feel comfortable going out looking like this. Make up did nothing to hide it!
just thought I would update and let everyone know how it was going. |

I used to get IPL done on regular basis. It works! But, I found it to be very painful and the pain increased with every treatment.
I don't regret it, but I don't think I will do it again. |

Thats something I'm wondering about Skincare, if it gets more painful each time?? that would be a major bummer..lol
I had my 2nd treatment on Monday at 10am and its now 11pm on Wednesday and my left cheek is very swollen still, especially under my eye. My whole faces looks puffy actually. Hope it starts to go down soon! |

It could be different for you. I have very low tolerance to pain.
When I got the treatment, I even used the numbing cream before the IPL treatment and I still felt it. |

This was my experience too. I'm not sure the results outweighed the pain!
However, I would like to get a series of treatments on my hands as it is really effective for hyperpigmentation. |

Exactly! I'd also love to get my chest treated as it has quite a bit of sun damage too! But I know it would take multiple treatments and that adds up $$$. |

Well, its nearly four days later and I am still very swollen!
My whole face is puffy, but in the mornings I am so swollen that my left eye is partially closed until I am up and about for a while. The swelling does subside during the day but doesn't go down completely.
Lots of marks on my face, caps are darkened, lots and lots of small blackish dots all over my cheeks and neck.
Glad I am nothing big on this week, its looks like its going to take a while to settle down?
I found it definately hurt alot more the second time...I will be dreading the third treatment! |

Hi Bermie,
Have you talked to your doctor about the swelling? I know everyone responds differently to the treatments, but I never experienced the type of swelling that you're having.
Do hope you recover soon! |

I was not that swollen and for a long time. I don't think anyone noticed if I was swollen. Are you sure that it clearly show that you are swollen?
Did other people make comments to you? |

Just wanted to update..
its been about 16 days since my second IPL treatment. I was really quite swollen for about 10 days, more so my left side! Also the caps really darkened (sort of a purple colour..eek!) and lots of darkened pigmentation, my skin looked dirty? Still have some very tiny dark dark spots around jawline and neck.
But must admit I am loving the results.. my capillaries are fading really really well, and my skin looks more even toned, looks REALLY good with make up on and don't need half as much!
They recommend about 5 treatments, and I think my skin will look really good if I can just afford all five!! Booked for the 3rd in about 2 more weeks. |

That's great news, Bermie! Wow, you stayed swollen for 10 days?? Hopefully, your third treatment will result in less swelling. But that's great that you are so pleased with the results!
When I did a series of three several years back, the esthetician also had me do a few microdermabrasions which really helped to "slough off" the darkened spots.
I hope LuvSkinCare reads your update, as I think she is contemplating IPL treatments for herself. |
