I really need advice!!! I really don't use anything other than a little make up on my face. No sunscreen, no moisturizer, no serums etc. I would prefer to not spend a fortune on products, but I'm open.

My skin is combo, t-zone oily, rest is normal. I have some horizontal lines I'd like to address on my forehead, the "eleven", and smile lines. My eyelids are semi-hooded (mostly genetic). My pores are medium to large in appearance. I also have some freckles from the sun.

Please recommend a skin care routine for me, I'd like to improve the appearance of my skin and prevent aging as much as possible. Less is more with me, it's going to be hard to start using products as it is, so a list of ten different morning products and eight night time will never cut it Smile Thank you so much!!

I would suggest you start with two things: sunscreen and a vitamin C serum.

Sunscreen
There are a few threads here to help you find a good product. A lot of folks are liking the Burnout products. I've not tried them, but they get rave reviews. I like the Marie Veronique face screen - wonderful sunscreen/foundation in one, but it's pricey.

http://www.essentialdayspa.com/forum/viewthread.php?tid=36990&highlight=physical+sunscreen

Vitamin C Serum

Skinceutials C, E Ferulic is great. You can buy sample sizes on Ebay or atwww.skinmedix.com. Skinmedica is good also. There are a few others out there - search the threads here for more suggestions.

A third recommendation, if you want one more thing, would be a nightime moisturizer.

Thank you for your reply. Is there a moisturizer/sunscreen combo that works well?

Hi Jencarl,
I would also suggest you try adding a retinoid (tretinoin, retin a) to your skincare routine. It's used only at night and is another "tried and true" product for anti-aging.

I 2nd this. In the 30's is a perfect time to start a retinoid product at night. Use a good sunscreen during the day and you really are all set.

I truly wish I would have done all this in my 30"s. You'll be ahead of the game if you start now! Smile

I would start with Tretinoin or retin a 0.025% in the cream form. For me, this was less intense and I could allow my skin to acclimate before bumping up to a higher percentage. If your skin is not used to a retinoid, it may go through a period of redness, flakiness, and some discomfort. Retin a is a prescription only skin care treatment product, but you can order it from an overseas pharmacy called Alldaychemist.

I've had no problems ordering from them, but please check out their website before you order.

Also, you could ask your general physician for a prescription.

I hope I can be of some help also. As for some sort of retinol brand, you could start with something with low percentage. I've read that Chantecaille has the lowest percentage. Make sure you use sunblock from now on, because your skin will burn or become more sensitive. You can also use RoC or Avene, if Avene is sold in Canada.

I really love Vivier vitamin C serum, expensive, but so worth it, reliable and it works. This will help with our pores some. Be sure to apply it on 20 minutes after washing and try to wait 20 minutes after before you apply your moisturizer and sunblock. Also, read my review of Vivier, on how a "virgin" should start off using vitamin C. I had to start applying it every 4th or 5th day and after a couple of weeks, every 3rd day and so on.

I would suggest Clarisonic and use it with Aveeno calming cleanser or Cetaphil. You will notice a huge difference after a few months with your pores. Kate Sumerville cleanser is nice but after awhile, I found with Clarisonic, my skin felt more dry. You will also find that once you start using Clarisonic, you will find that you need to apply less of all your other skin care products because it will soak it a lot better, due to the fact that Clarisonic help clean your skin better.

Eventually, you may want to start getting Botox. Cellcosmet eye contour cream is a perfect eye makeup base and is an excellent eye cream.

As for makeup, you don't have to wear a lot if you don't want to. Why not just focus on your best features and just bring it out more. I find that both Cle de Peau and Chantecaille loose powder is really nice on the skin and will let your skin show and help with some shine on your t-zone.

A nice Retinol product i just started using is SAS Twilight cream - it has great reviews and is meant to provide most of the positive benefits of stronger retinoids, like retin-a/tretinoin but without all the nasty side effects.

I also have combo-oily skin, and tried Tretinoin/Retin-a gels/creams a while back with *horrible* results. My skin dried out to the degree of being *painful* (despite lathering myself in oils and moisturisers), it was red, sore (even the gentlest cleansers stung like hell), flaking like crazy, and more lines/wrinkles actually appeared due to all the dryness, dehydration and sensitivity in my skin. I looked awful! - i couldnt even cover up the nightmare skin with makeup, b/c it just peeled off in patches and made me look like i had leprocy!
I know there is an accustomisation period when using prescription retinoids, but i stuck with it for 4 painful (and embarassing!) months, looking like a complete HORROR!, and it never showed any sign of improving - i just got more lines and wrinkles and looked 10 years older than when i started! I've ne ver had sensitive skin before, nor after, so i dont believe that was the issue.

After a long break my skin is finally returning to what it was before the prescription retinoids - i now (almost) 'like' the youthfulness/glowiness of having slightly oily skin and will never dry the crap out of it again with such strong prescription medications.

I have had much more positive results with AHAs and occasional BHAs - Glycolic Acid has really smoothed out my skin, softened any fine lines that remain, and given me a more glowy, even skin. It lifts away old, dead skin cells that litter the surface of the skin and reveals newer skin below which looks younger and healthier.
Salicylic Acid clears my pores where i need it and also contributes to the whole 'new skin' process.
They're both HG products for me now.

Im also liking SAS Twilight cream for the vit-a content, in place of the stronger retinoids.

I'd suggest OP uses an antioxidant serum in the am,
Twilight Cream in the pm,
and an AHA peel 1x a week.

HTH! xxxx

This is where I stand so far...

I ordered the clarisonic brush because I have coveted it for quite some time and was looking for an excuse to buy it Smile

I am going to make Vit C serum using Kassy_A's recipe with furelic.

I haven't decided on a sunscreen yet, I would like a moisturizer and SS in one if there is a good one out there.

I ordered Tretinoin .025 cream

Am I missing anything crucial?

Hi. Regarding a moisturizer/sunscreen in one, many people here on the forum -- including me -- love Devita's Solar Protective Moisturizer. It is a zinc-based sunscreen and is one of the only sunscreens that doesn't break me out.

Actually I was going to recommend the Skinceuticals CE Ferulic too! And also suggest to get it cheaper on eBay if you are tight on cash. Also you can start with Oil of Olay Regenerist Daily Regenerating Serum.

http://www.consumersearch.com/wrinkle-cream/olay-regenerist-regenerating-serum-fragrance-free

It has palmitoyl pentapeptide and an antioxidant (niacinamide). It has gotten rave reviews many at Amazon.com

http://www.epinions.com/review/Olay_Regenerist_Daily_Regenerating_Serum/content_98352729732

The other is Olay Total Effects Anti-aging Moisturizer 7-in-1 with SPF 15.

http://www.amazon.com/Olay-Total-Effects-Anti-Aging-Moisturizer/dp/B00005JTW8/ref=pd_bxgy_bt_text_b

This is probably what you should use in the AM because of the SPF protection. Also, I recommend using a toner/astringent after you have cleaned your face with a gentle face wash. I recommend Neutrogena's Pore Refining Toner which contains both AHA and BHA. It works for me because I have combination oily skin.

http://www.drugstore.com/products/prod.asp?pid=45776&catid=10210&trx=29904&tab=1#1

Paula Begoun has her own formulation of this I think but what I'm suggesting are all drugstore brands, except for the CE Ferulic (hence, eBay) that you can buy cheap at Walgreens or at Costco (sometimes even cheaper with a coupon). In today's tough economy, one has to take costs in consideration.

I can't vouch for a Retinol product because I use Retin-A which I get from my doctor via insurance ($10). But an OTC product that got rave reviews is Roc Retinol Correxion Deep Wrinkle Daily Moisturizer, SPF 30.

Im' in Canada..the north pole actually..where the polar bears live Laughing

Ok, really...I'm in Ottawa Smile
But you can get Avene at almost any drugstore here .
The 2 chains I go to that have it are Shoppers Drug Mart and pharmaplus.

Shoppers this week if you spend $75 you get a bonus bag worth $75 says there is 10 things in it.
that is ontop of whatever other bonuses the store has..Iget a lot of my skin stuff there (they even have Haushka at some stores and spa brands)....and Caudalie too!

Jean Coutu also should have that brand..but i do not have one nearme, they are in quebec mostly.

I am 33 and all I can say is I envy people who have a simple skincare routine.
My skin seems to be too complicated.
I have combination, sensitive skin, that ocassionaly breaks out (genetic),some food intolerance too (try not to eat much dairy..exept ice cream sometimes...trying to eat sorbet though).

Also have problems w extremely dry heels and elbows..and skin that heals slowly.

At least thanks to EDS and Skincarerx I've found many new brands that are quite helpful.
I just wish my skin items were cheaper.

Overall my skin looks nice..exept I'm trying to repair my skin from falling on my face this year Sad
doing a good job as most people do not beleive me...

For sunscreen I really like MD skincare tinted moisturizer and also Jane Iredale tinted cream.

For a cheaper drugstore one Marcelle tinted cream with spf is pretty good!

If you are in Canada and email Neostrata canada, they will send you out samples.
they are very helpful and I've gotten samples maybe 3 times so far (this is over the years though).

they have small sample packets of most items.
I like the vitamin C capsules 10% they make.
they sent me a sample with 2 capsules and it was good to try.
for vitamin C it is affordable too.

I met this woman yesterday, and she has flawless skin, poreless, everything! I told her so and she said that she gets regular glycolic peels. She used to have bad acne skin.
I told her about the Clarisonic, but she said that she already invested in her peels and will keep doing that for now. I don't blame her, but she could see with my skin that Clarisonic does work.
I just ordered a newer version and can't wait to use the body brush Dancing

Hi Ottawa Shopper,

I live in Toronto and I agree that it would be nice to have a simpler routine, but I am so used to what I do that it really is not an issue.

I am trying to focus on body care and would like to use retinal on my body. Any suggestions?

I don't shop much at drugstores, so I know that I am missing out. I was not aware that Avene now has retinal on the shelf. Because most of the brands I am using is working, I just continue to search for something that will prevent skin sagging also.

Milk can make me feel ill and make me breakout.

For kind of high end store I also like Murale-
they have a lot of the same things as Sephora and u can use your Shoppers points there.

I used to buy tons of stuff at Shoppers, but since they have had lousy promotions lately I am not buying anything.
Almost every time they had a 20x points on anything I'd get food there..the organic store brand foods are actually really good.

esp the blue corn chips and the organic cheese puffs.
also the organic maple syrup is really cheap (have seen it at $5 a 250 or 300 glass bottle).

The website for Murale which is Shoppers owned and seems to be the competition of Sephora in Canada is www.murale.ca

they just opened one near me and it is a nice store-bigger than the Sephora they just opened here.

Can't say I like Sephora at all, lousy customer service, they do not know when new stock is coming in or about the products on display in the store.
also you can not buy a gift online in Canada or with a Canadian credit card and send that to the US.
You can only use a Canadian card to buy things in Canada.

To me that is lousy as I wanted to buy my mother a gift online and send it to Florida.
Sephora canceled my order even though my card has a US address added to it and I have never had anything else that is US based (like buying in qvc that is US only), other companies have never declined my card.

Sephora customer service on the phone could not help either.

Ended up getting my mother some lavender products from Skincarerx-at least they ship to Canada,US and other countries with no issues.
For the items that can be shipped out of the US.
Some can not,but for those brands it seems EDs is allowed to ship those in Canada only (guess it is a business thing...).

Anyway,
guess this post is kind of long
but trying to say Murale is a neat store.
Sephora is too annoying to deal with (and lousy prices), EDS is pretty good too Smile

I am 36 and recently changed my routine to try to get a bit ahead of some fine lines and some dark marks from a bout of acne last year. I now do the following routine:

am: wash with nubo cleanser (aha based)
IS clinical pro-heal
La Mer lotion

pm: wash with nubo and clarisonic brush
alternate between skinceuticals retinol 0.3 and neostrata 10% glycolic cream every other night
La Mer Cream

I have had great results after a (literal) rough patch for the first two weeks. I will gradually try to move up to the retinol 0.5 over the next couple of months. The dark spots are almost all gone, two remain but they are fading too and my face seems more taut around my eyes and mouth.
