Doe anyone use this I hear they are great for whiteheads. I am not interested in it lightening my skin. |

Benzoyl peroxide (2.5%) is extremely effective at treating acne for me. It doesn't lighten skin, that's a myth. |

I read somewhere that Benzoyl Peroxide oxidises the skin and is can contribute to aging, is this true? My niece (11 years old) is getting a little spotty and has been prescribed 2.5%. Is it safe enough for her? |

Well, to a degree, yes it's true. BP works by creating oxygen in the skin and p-acnes (the acne bacteria) can't survive in an oxygenated environment.
However, I know ladies who have used BP for 20 years or more and their skin certainly hasn't prematurely aged. Make sure she's using a good sunscreen and she should be fine.
Worth noting is that acne can be pro-aging too! The reason being it is inflammation and continual inflammation promotes premature aging.
If still using BP in adulthood I'd introduce a topical antioxidant at the opposite end of the day to counter some of the side-effects. |

I used to use Oxy 10 (as it was branded in the UK) years ago as a teen and it wrecked absolute havoc on my skin, which is why I'm asking.
I know, telling an 11 year-old to use sunscreen is pretty much impossible, but I'll try encouraging her. Thanks for the speedy reply |

10% BP is very harsh you dont need to use 10%. As Josh mentioned 2.5% is very effective for acne. |

Indeed, 10% is *very* harsh. There's quite a few studies showing 2.5% to be just as effective.
If you're still in the UK, my favourite product is PanOxyl Aquagel 2.5% (note, AquaGel, not AcneGel which is another that they make but that contains several other irritants). Boots and other larger chains have it (or can order it) and it's around £2.50 a tube. |

I'm sure I read that BP had been linked to various skin problems that don't show up right away but can show up several years later as they do harm to the skin. Stoney on SkinBio has written a great depth about her experiences which I'd advise anyone who is thinking of starting BP to read up on, its not good for the skin at all! |

While BP is a pro-oxidant, its the lesser of 2 evils for me. The pro-oxidant effects can be lessened with the use of anti-oxidants.
I've been using BP on and off for over 20 years. I don't believe its been detrimental to my skin. However as everyone's skin is different, someone can defiantly have a bad reaction to it. |

ive been using epiduo and its been really good at keeping my pimples away. It has both adapalene and benzoyl peroxide.
Wish I tried it before I went on accutane, because I might not have had to go to such drastic measures. |

This is a product I would never, ever use. Won't let my teenage son use it. Scary. Use salicylic acid products (AHA products of any time). |

They say that BP is best for teenaged type acne but not so much for adult onset acne. I didn't use it as a teenager so I can't comment but I tried using it in Duac (10% BP with antibiotic). It burnt my skin big time! I'm going back to plain old Eryacne and Differin.
My brother was told to use BP by the GP before the dermatologist and was told to start at the lowest concentration and slowly build it up.
I started using AHAs a few years ago, particularly in MD Formulations which was great but pricey. I prefer physical methods of exfoliation to chemical ones. |
