Ive read other resources (personal blogs, skincare forums, etc) that talk about how pigmentation can get worse after you've used Obagi...or, if you stop. Is this true? Has anyone had negative side effects using this product after a couple of cycles or long term besides redness and peeling? I started using it and did have great results but after reading some of this information I stopped, afraid that it would begin to have the opposite effect eventually.

The hyperpigmentation may appear darker when you first start using Obagi because the dead, overlying skin is being sloughed. However, this is temporary and will lighten over time--much lighter than before you started. Once you are complete with the 18 week regimen, you must stay on a maintenance routine otherwise the hyperpigmentation will slowly and eventually return. It will not get darker than before as a result of using Obagi.

The most important thing is to be diligent with a good sunscreen. Some people do well on the chemical sunscreens, but in my experience the physical sunscreens are what will help you keep the pigmentation off after you complete the 18 weeks. I think a lot of the people who have darkening of the pigmentation either don't use a good sunscreen, or stopped the process too early where their pigmentation did not have a chance to be corrected at the deeper layers.

Hi Lain,
I agree with Kristy and Rileygirl. Obagi will certainly take care of your hyperpigmentation but you still to be diligent when it comes to a maintenance plan after you finish the 18 weeks. If you don't, then you do run the risk of the spots returning.

Like Rileygirl said, the use of sunscreen is crucial to your success -- both while doing Nuderm and after.

If your major issue is hyperpigmentation, Nuderm is your best bet.

Hi. After spending some money on Obagi products to rid of dark pigmentation, you must also buy a good sunscreen to protect your skin.
this is a maintenance program for life. A good 45SPF+ would be good.
Dont' get discourage so easily.....

I have completed second round for Nu derm system and on maintanance again.
Everytime, when I on maintenance regime, my freckles come back not as dark as before using Nuderm. But they return as soon as I stopped a full Nu derm regime. And now I realized that my skin got very thin and seems like I have a rosacea (I can see my blood vassels on my face) I am scared of using Obagi Nuderm now. But I have no other alternative at this moment. I am still using clear and blender w/ Tretinoin three times per week . I don't know what to do.....If I stop using Obagi, my freckles will be darker...
