Having noticed some lines appearing deeper on waking....i decided to experiment. Pillows seem to scrunch up the flesh of your face at times... over time maybe increasing or deepening lines.
In order to minimise wrinkles we are told to lie on our backs. However, its hard to maintain this position through the night when we are unaware of our movements.
So i decided to sleep with no pillow and to my surprise it feels great! I have slept just as well if not better. Also, it seems impossible to scrunch my lower face against the mattress... maybe its the shape of my head!.......just wondered if anybody else does this? |

Hi jedder, I'm new to the forum. About two weeks ago I found out some information regarding hair breakage / skin wrinkles due to cotton pillowcases. You can do more research on this topic.
Check out a website called Neero-Anna dot com. I'd just purchased a set of his and hers satin pillowcases just last week. Note, I haven't received them yet.
Just to give you a little background... Bridal Satin, not the polyester satin is supposed to be the best fabric to sleep on to avoid just the problem you're having in addition to hair breakage due to cotton fabric drying out the natural oils from your hair. |

Thanks for the information.
For me, the problem is that because a pillow is raised.....it pushes into your face, causing your skin to scrunch up.
Without a pillow, there is nothing to raise your head and therefore nothing that pushes against your face. |

I use satin pillow cases, but I also have some cotton ones. |

I understand your thinking here, but wouldn't you still be pushing your face into the mattress? I may have to try sleeping this way again. I know that years ago I heard that sleeping without a pillow was great for ones posture.
(BTW, I have tried silk, satin, etc. pillowcases and they do not make 1 bit of difference on my skin. If I sleep with my face on my pillow, I get lines irregardless of the fabric that is covering my pillow!) |

Rileygirl - it may just be the shape of my head.....but... because the mattress is soft yet solid, my weight is taken by the upper side of my face and my lower face naturally curves away from the mattress. There is no material raising up into my face to scrunch it. |

I've trained myself to sleep on my back with no pillow. It was hard at first but now I'm uncomfortable if I try to use a pillow. My neck feels better, too. |

I have been sleeping without a pillow for years now and I never wake up with lines on my face. It;s just a metter of getting used to it. |

I actually usually prefer sleeping without a pillow, but lately I have been using one. I'll have to see if it helps with my n/l lines, but if memory serves, my face gets just as scrunchy. I haven't committed myself to training myself to sleep on my back; some nights it just seems too hard! Anyway, I will try sleeping w/o a pillow again and report back. |

I guess you are right, Hyacinthgirl.
I don't get any lines during sleep, but, then, I do sleep on my back - more like a mummy. I guess my 36G boobs have trained me for that! |

I heard a supermodel one time talking on tv and she swore that she found sleeping on a baby pillow to be effective, as it provides some cushioning for the head, but not enough to create wrinkles etc. So thats worth trying |

I heard about that also and I would have to agree. |

But, I sleep on both my back and my side, and I use a special madras called tempurwww.tempur.se
The madras is firm and adjust itself the the body's position and weight of your body, the pillow works the same way. I cant sleep without it since I started using it. And, the pillow are so "hard" that the face wouldn't touch the pillow when I sleep on my side. |

I use the similar model of Millenium, but the exact same pillow I have seems to have been replaced to these models. The models are in different sizes, you have to find the one that give your neck and shoulders the right "line" and support when you sleep on the side. when I sleep om the side, I have my head just at the end of the pillow, and still my neck gets it full support and the face wouldn't be tucked in to the pillow at all.
I have also tried the "copycats" of these tempur products, but there's a hug difference, see if your local hospital/physical therapist or similar have a similar product, the serious ones, let you borrow the samples home to test out the right size. a bit pricey, but worth every penny, I never leave my pillow at home, always travel with it. |

If you want a pillow that does not scrunch your face try the Medi flow pillow.
it is one of those pillows you put water in and it supports your head.
they are really good for neck pain.
was reccomended to me by a doctor and also at physio for my neck. |

That sounds AWESOME! A water pillow for my face!!
I used to be a stomach sleeper so I didn't use a pillow, but now that I switched to my right side I need one. I hear satin is supposed to be good for your hair and skin when you are sleeping, but I feel like it has the opposite effect on me. |

Ooh, the water pillow sounds nice!
Well, I don't think sleeping without a pillow has made too much difference for me. But it is hard to tell. I would actually recommend sleeping without a pillow. It just seems to make sense.
I actually have one of these: http://www.pillowmart.com/chiropractic-pillows_therapeutica.html. My chiropractor made me buy it. It does a pretty good job in helping me sleep on my back, but I haven't been using it lately because I've been out of town. However, I am kind of all over the place: back, side, stomach – and half the time I end up throwing the pillow across the room. Frownies are pretty much the thing for me. I am just a face smoosher. |

I own a tempurpedic pillow but growing up I always have liked sleeping without one. I especially like sleeping on my stomach, and my face squished to the side lol. I have slept like this as a child and it's a really hard habit to break! I would like to learn to sleep on my back, its just hard. I think sleeping without a pillow is just bad as well as sleeping with a bad pillow. |
