I am wondering how much sunscreen you are supposed to use on the face. I have heard 1/4 teaspoon to one full teaspoon.
When I apply more than a quarter teaspoon it seems like I have so much product on my face it ends up getting rubbed into my fingers when I am rubbing it on. Is more than a quarter teaspoon really necessary?
Also, does it make a difference if its a chemical or physical sunscreen?
It would make sense that physical sunscreens would need more since you need to get enough of the particles to provide a shield on your face.
Lastly, when you apply a cream first how long do you need to wait to apply your sunscreen after? Is it ok if you apply a more liquidy sunscreen like La Roche Posay Anthelios XL Fluide Extreme over a more thick face cream?
I know these are a lot of questions, feel free to answer what you know! Thanks |

When sunscreens are tested they are applied at 2mg per cm square. For an average size face that equates to approximately 1/4 teaspoon for the face (and the same again for the neck). If you have a larger face (like me, a 6'4" in proportion man), you'll likely need to apply more.
What I tend to do is apply as much as I can (usually slightly less than 1/4 teaspoon), wait 10 minutes or so, then apply a little more. This only works with some sunscreens though as with others they can ball-up, so it may not work for yours.
It doesn't matter whether it's physical or chemical, sunscreens the world over are tested in exactly the same way, 2mg/cm2 on clean skin with nothing else applied before or after. I'm mentioning this because we don't know whether applying other products before (or after) will reduce your sunscreens protection. When they're tested and rated they are the only product applied. So I feel safer applying them in a way that as closely as possible matches the way in which they were tested. |
