Hello!
I noted that Vitamix is coming to my local Costco in a few weeks. I am getting into making smoothies, and the new 5200 model is available.
I am wondering two things from those of you whom own a Vitamix:
- is it, in your opinion, worth the $500 Canadian dollar price tag? I am not certain whether the dry mill is included, but am presuming it is
- would you pay the additional $99 for the shorter 32 oz container so the unit could fit under your kitchen counter?
I have a bamix hand blender that cost $200 and has been worth its weight in gold, especially in making baby food. I don't mind paying for quality products, and wanted to see what my fellow EDS members had to say in regard to this potential purchase.
Thanks in advance for your input and comments! |

I have had a VitaMix for about 5 years now and love it. That said, I don't use it much anymore since I'm not doing my smoothies like I used to.
I personally wouldn't spend the extra money for the smaller container.
I also wouldn't spend the money for the grain container either. You can use a normal container for grains but it will look beat up which is why they try to get you to buy the other container. The blades are the same (to my understanding). But, if you don't hand-grind your grains then you really don't need it.
I think the VM is overall worth it. I used it to make smoothies, peanut, cashew, and almond butter as well as making soups and bread dough. It works wonderful and is a workhorse. I've not used mine in well over a year simply because it's in storage while I transition houses. I cannot wait to get it back out and have a green smoothie! |

I have two the original old metal vita-mix and a regular new one with the large container, that's how it came when I purchased it, I have 9 ft. ceilings downstairs so it fits under my cabinets. They both get quite a work out and to me worth every penny I spent on them! I don't blow money on a lot of things, but like my professional size (restaurant size) Cuisinart, I paid a pretty penny and it's still working fine after 26+ years! Sometimes you get your moneys worth! |

It depends upon what you're goals are with the blender. Heavy use and a wide range will necessitate a better quality. I have a Blendtec - my parents had a vita mix forever - the old metal one. Like the Eveready bunny it kept on going!
I love the Blendtec and use it for smoothies and soups mostly.
Have you checked prices on other blenders? The L'Equip (used by Alton Brown on the food network) loves his (It looks very cool ). |

My previous blender was a Cuisanart. But I'm sure it wasn't the pro model - It was worthwhile for about 10 years but there is no comparison with the Blendtec. |

I have my Vitamix for about 7-8 years, and it is used almost daily.
My mom bought Blendtec so it would fit under the cabinets and loves it also.
IMHO it is worth every penny. |

Thank you for your thoughts - its helps make the decision a bit easier to make with as much information as possible
I looked at the Blendtec as well as the Vitamix, however because the warranty is significantly less on the Blendtec (1 yr vs. 7 yrs) I am leaning toward the Vitamix...though the Blendtec is about $200 cheaper to be fair. |
