Hi, I recently have been using Skinoren (azelaic acid) cream and would just like to know other products that it can be used with.
So far I either use it alone or mix with Retin A cream (as per instructions of another forum). But could it also be applied with other actives, such as AHA's (Obagi Exfoderm) or Vit C serum (Skinceuticals CE Ferulic) or Arbutin (Obagi Blend FX).
Thanks in advance,

There are no contraindications that I'm aware of. You will need to watch for irritation if using it with other acids. |

Thanks for your answer, the reason I want to use it with other actives such as aha, arbutin and vit c is because azelaic acid can increase effciacy while reducing irritation associated with their use. |

I wouldn't put money on it reducing irritation! Azelaic acid is mildly irritating in itself. I can only tolerate it using short contact therapy and even then, it stings while on.
Niacinamide is an ingredient to look for if you want to reduce the irritation of retinoid use. |

Yeah, azelaic can cause irritation (at least initially or with overuse) but it really seems to help with my rosacea prone skin by calming it down and reducing the reaction to certain triggers.
I will definitely look into niacinamide. Is there a brand you specifically recommend and what sort of strength? Can I also mix this with tretinoin?

NIA24 is a pretty popular brand, though not cheap. They use a derivative of niacinamide which is oil soluble. Olay Regenerist Daily Regenerating Serum (fragrance-free) is an excellent serum and contains about 2-3% niacinamide.
It can be used with tretinoin, and it reduces the negative side-effects while also providing some excellent effects of it's own (skin lightening and brightening, helps with acne, strengthens the skin barrier, increases moisture levels in skin).
You can also purchase the powder and mix it with your own serums/creams or even make your own toner (I did this for about a year, using witch hazel, glycerin and niacinamide). Anything over about 2% is best. |

Josh, thanks for the recommendations and advice.
I'm always on the look out for new actives and this one sounds very promising.

I used azelaic acid before and asked my derm whether I can use any other products with it. He said that I can use anything but I must wait 30 minutes before applying it. It's nothing new as I think most of you know this already! |

Yes, the reason is that most products are designed to be applied (and penetrate better) on skin with a "normal" pH, which is somewhere between 4.5 and 6 for most people.
Applying an AHA, BHA, retinoid, azelaic acid, serum containing ascorbic acid etcetera lowers the skin's pH temporarily, so waiting a little while gives the pH a chance to rise to normal levels again. |
