Hi i am planning on making some lipbalm with avocado oil...
what are some basic ingredients for lipbalm? I don't like the "waxiness" of some lipbalms, is it okay to eliminate bees wax? |

only ingredient I know is beeswax. Carekate will have tons of suggestions I'm sure! |

Cocoa butter, shea butter, any kind of "butter" (except the stuff you spread on toast!)...the trick to eliminate the waxiness is to make sure you add lots of and lots of oil (not just avocado, but stuff like jojoba oil is good for lips, too). The ratio should be like a teaspoon of beeswax/"butter" and then a couple tablespoons worth of the oil. When the mixture is heated, it may seem like there's too MUCH oil in it and it will never harden, but just put the little lip balm containers in the freezer for about half an hour and voila -- homemade lip balm without all the bad stuff! |

P.S. I think you need to use at least a *pinch* of beeswax to give your homemade lip balm "form," although I could be wrong and just using one of the "butters" might be enough.... |

I just got Perfect Potion lip balm today and the only ingredients in it are: shea butter, cocoa butter, avocado oil, vitamin E, lime fruit oil and peppermint oil. So it looks like you don't have to have wax at all. I love the consistency of it - not too hard and not too soft. Very impressive lipbalm! |

I've been sat here with my pen and paper scribbling away all these recipes - Carekate where would we be without you |

I got a can of 100% pure shea butter last week, it is pretty hard too, but not as hard as 100% pure beeswax(I can put a dent in my car with the beeswax stick ). I made a balm in a pot with shea butter, and a stick (soft) with beeswax, and I find you would need a lot more shea butter to create the right consistency (either be the balm or stick) than the beeswax. I hate the waxy feeling too, but like carakate said, just a pinch of beeswax will do the job nicely (even lesser if you are making it in a pot). My lip balm stick is very soft and not waxy, downside of it, I used it up faster bc it's softer and melt on my lips.
But of course, I am still looking for a better oil/butter/etc to mix in with my pure avocado oil, perhaps the wax reduces the penetration of the oil, will let you all know if I find a better substitute.
Hope it helps,
