Has anyone ever had bad reactions to any DIY treatments? I'm sort of hesitant on trying any of these because I definitely have no idea what I'm doing other than mixing a few chemicals together. What's the worse that can happen?

You could have problems!!! Do your homework first read the DIY recipies and I posted a thread "ingredient information sites" also the DIY suppliers tell you what will mix with what and not. It's worth learning what you should and shouldn't mix and proper percentages first.

I'm not much of a DIY-er, but I learned the hard way (from layering two products too soon) not to combine niacinamide with a low-pH acid.

Definitely don't start DIYing until you are comfortable. Improperly formulated products could be just plain ineffective or very irritating.

A few things you will want to know :
    proper pH
    proper %'s of actives
what ingredients can and cant be mixed together
    how to properly dissolve actives
does your formula need a preservative

If I may add,
does it require an emulsifier?
What is your emulsifier or preservative soluble in....eg water, oil, ethanol??

You can cause a great deal of harm with diy skincare. Learn about safe levels first and make mild products in the beginning. A lot of commercial products advertise high % active ingredients because their products are formulated at ineffective ph or have degraded from sitting on store shelves. When you make and use fresh you will get great results at much lower percentages. My vit c serum only has 8% aha's and vit c in it but is very effective.

The recipe index (suppliers listed near bottom also).

http://www.essentialdayspa.com/forum/viewthread.php?tid=11902

Ingredient Information Sites (a lot of help researching ingredients)

http://www.essentialdayspa.com/forum/viewthread.php?tid=39428&highlight=ingredient+information+sited

It's a load of reading, but it's best to research and learn what works and how to formulate.

Take a look atwww.skinactives.com There's allot of information on products, the percentages required and whether they are water or oil soluble. Just start off with some basic serums first.
