Or is it not possible since it's present in most fruits? I need a chemical exfoliant, but not BHA because I think I'm allergic...

Some people are allergic to certain fruits, so it's possible to be allergic to AHAs. In fact, there's the lactic acid stinging test which indicates not an allergy, but a nerve sensitivity. So I would recommend low strength first and build up if it's fine.

It's always possible to be either allergic or just have a bad reaction to just about anything. You may want to test a small spot either inside your elbow or behind your ear and see after 24-48 hours how your skin reacts. It's the safest route to be certain without affecting your entire face. Smile
Good luck!

Hmm well I did do a skin test when I first tried BHAs.. The inside of my elbow was fine but when I put it on my face, I ended up looking burned and patchy =/

Well then I would suggest behind your ear, it's closer to the facial skin, I can't say it's 100% foolproof, but it's an attemp to check for sensitivities. Smile

I had this experience twenty years ago and had to stay away from anything that had AHAs in them. Now for some reason I am not bothered at all....even with stronger percentages.

Did you have to work your way up from weaker strengths or did you just suddenly start tolerating them?

No because it seemed when I used it at all my skin reacted. I just figured it wasn't for me and left it alone. Now 20 years later my skin tolerates it well....go figure Laughing

Well remember we are talking about twenty years...no I had no reaction whatsoever when I started using it two years ago. I use a mild AHA daily and my skin loves it. I can also use retin-a .1 and not have one ounce of reddness or flaking....at one time if I used AHA I would look like I had a second degree burn and it would take weeks to calm down.
