Hi, this might be a really silly thing to post, but I was wondering whether someone could give me some advice as to how to mix thickeners/powders (i.e. xantham, guar gum, even arrowroot etc in cooking) into liquids.

I need to do this for a diy hair gel, but also for cooking at times, and no matter how carefully I sift or throw into a mixer bit by bit, I seem to get clumps. Then I try to strain and end up wasting half the powder since it won't thin out. This happens whether I throw it directly into the concoction I'm trying to make (which I risk less & less now), or into plain water first.

Can someone give me some tips? I have no idea how this is to be done and every diy recipe I see that includes powder just looks too intimidating for me to even consider trying these days. And I really want to try more recipes! Without wasting.
Do I need a particular type of tiny mixer?

The trick is to add the liquid to the powder, not the way around. So you have your measured quantity of powder and spoon a few drops of your liquid onto it then stir with the back of a spoon to create a paste. Keep adding small amounts of liquid until your paste is runny, then you can dump the paste into your full amount of liquid without getting lumps.

2nd this. It can be time consuming but this works well for me.
