Hi,
I planned to visit Japan right before the big catastrophe this spring, first to visit Tokyo and then travel threw the country and go south/southwest.
Our trip was canceled, and we got all of our money back from the travel agency, but it was in the last week, they keep insisting it was safe to do the trip, and there were no "disturbance" in the communication or anything, they had checked with all the hotels etc.
My sister and I planned this trip for our 75 year old dad. He have been dreaming of a trip to Japan since he was 20..so, we gave him this for his 75 birthday last fall. I have never seen my father cry so much in my hole life when he realized the destination..
My interest since we booked the trip has made me very curious about the Japanese people and the entire country, I would personally very much would like to travel there.
our father isn't getting any younger either, so we cant wait so long time, we have to decide what to do.
Anyway, media in Sweden have gone completely silent about the situation i Japan since the big catastrophe. The travel company here in Sweden says that's its all fine, OK to travel etc..
But, I want to hear it from you Japanese girls and boy living and knowing more real fact about the situation and tragedy your country when trough, I have a hard time to believe that its "all back to normal"..but I really would like to now how Your situation are right now.
And I will also like to give my condolences to the Japanese people for all lives lost in the tragedy.

Japan tends to downplay the danger to 'save face' because shame is a big sin there. As long as you stay far away from the nuclear disaster area you should be safe enough for a short period of time. |

Hi Vanilj,
PLEASE go to Japan. It sounds like it would make your dad so happy (and what a lovely gift it was from you and your sister). It is safe, at least down south (all employers kept their expat employees in Tokyo, meaning it must be safe, and my friend in the US is headed back to Osaka for holiday to see her family this month after delaying her trip). We have a Lonely Planet guide book as we are going next month and there is so much to see that I'm sad we are only there for just over a week. Additionally all the money you bring in through tourism will help Japan to recover from what happened.
We are headed to Tokyo/Kyoto/Hiroshima on our trip- but there are so many beautiful places we are missing...e.g. Okinawa (the islands look beautiful)
My dad dreams of travelling through Turkey, back to Italy etc (he has a fascination with ancient history) but he knows my mum will not want to go... he's not getting any younger and we keep telling him to go. When he retires (and he's 65 next month and hardly needs to work anymore) I hope he heads off on a long trip- hopefully we will be able to come with him for a bit.
Please take your dad to Japan |
