I think I finally figured out what these bumps are on my nose: sebaceous filaments. They are very similar to white/blackheads except they stick out beyond the surface so it makes my nose look rough and prickly. I've tried 1-2% BHA for a couple months already and it doesn't seem to work on them. I tried manually extracting them with a comedone extractor but they don't come out that easily and reform pretty quickly. I also use a Clarisonic for cleansing but it doesn't help much either.
Any suggestions? |

Hi Oasisjc, I'm trying to understand what they are and how they differ from w or b'heads. I gather they are a "tube" that collects from sebum & dead skin around a hair follicle? But we don't have hair follicles on our nose, do we? |

I'm actually not sure what the difference is either, but I do know that whenever I can successfully extract it, I get this stringy tube of sebum which is apparently characteristic of these filaments. And I do believe we have hair follicles all over the face.. some people just have much sparser hairs than others that it doesn't look like anything is there. Although I think what you read may have been trying to describe a pore as a hair follicle |

maybe use a clay mask on your nose every day?
clay is very good for absorbing stuff from clogged pores.
whenever I use a clay mask every day or 2 on my nose my pores look very nice and small. |

I gather from my reading that s.f. are just like blackheads except that there's no opening for air to reach it, oxidize & make it black, so it doesn't sound like yours are s.f. since you said they stick out. Sf's need to be extracted using a lancet to create an opening for them to escape.
If a blackhead sits for too long it comes out like a tube (after the black part), so I suspect that anything that's blocked and congested would take that formation, unless it develops into a zit where there gets to be a lot of it and takes a different consistency! gross.
I guess you do need to figure out how to use different types of acids constantly to battle them. The clay may work, or just collect on the tops of them - I seem to remember that happening to me way back, and then I scrubbed my skin raw trying to get it off. But doesn't it seem like ocm would be the best thing? Since they're already pushing out and may just need some help escaping? Have you tried yet? Maybe use some kind of disincrustation stuff or electric current help break it down/soften before trying as well. |
