I need help putting together a "replenishing" oil mixture for my face. Lately I have been having some noticeable flaking from retin-a, AALS pre-treat and AHA, obviously to be expected.
Last night I put straight Avocado oil on with great results but would love to kick that up a notch or two.
I am not familiar with oils and what can be used together etc. I currently have these oils on hand: grape seed, aloe vera, kukui, avocado, jojoba and rosehip.
I would love to get the kukui incorporated into something for the pigmentation help.
Any help would be greatly appreciated. |

i hear from a herbalist that it is unwise to mix essential oils on your own as it can cause side effects if used in the wrong proportions or when mixed with other essential oils |

The oils Alley mentions are carrier not essential oils. You do need to be careful with essential oils.

What is your skin type normally? I would start with mixing only 2 oils at a time in case you have a reaction you will know which caused the problem. This is my experience with the one's you mention (I'm on the dry side/acne prone):
grape seed - very drying, usually only rec'd for oily skin
kukui - this is my favorite oil, its light yet moisturizing and does not cause me to breakout
jojoba - seems people either love or hate this, didn't work for me, caused breakouts
Regarding Aloe Vera, I find this to be drying, I also think it would be difficult to mix with the oils but also depends on the forumula. |

Yes, it does depend on one's skin...
In case it helps, my favorite three oils are sea buckthorn oil (must be very diluted before applying), rosehip seed oil, and avocado oil. All three I find to be miraculous for the skin and virtually always see results the next day or right away! I also find olive oil to be quite good.
For reference, other carrier oils and butters that I've tried but haven't been impressed with or seen much results are: cocoa butter, shea butter, almond oil, grapeseed oil, apricot oil, coconut oil, jojoba oil, wheat germ oil, and tamanu oil. |

P.S. Since you have rosehip seed oil and avocado oil, those two together should be wonderful for the skin! |

GirlieGirl and cm5597 thank you so much for all great info. I would never have thought an oil could be drying
I think I will start by mixing avocado and rosehip together.
One more question GirlieGirl do you put the kukui oil on full strength? |

Hi, cm5597. I have read good things about the sea buckthorn oil, but have never tried it. Tell me what miraculous result you see from it please! |

Hi Rileygirl! -- Whenever I apply it, my skin the next morning is very moisturized and glowing and my complexion is amazingly even and smooth, almost regardless of what my skin looked like the night before. It does also appear to speed up skin healing. I found that applying the diluted oil on the skin while your skin is still moist after showering leaves you with much better looking skin in the morning. I like to dilute it with Rosehip Seed oil, but I've had good results with most combinations of oils.
Sea buckthorn oil has a perfect 2:1 ratio of omega-6 fatty acids omega-3 fatty acids, is high in vitamins C, A, and E and is high in a wide variety of essential nutrients. It's supposed to be great for scar healing and skin trauma.
When I do apply it, I dilute it A LOT, because the oil is a very deep red and can stain fabric, etc. Like for a whole large bottle of oil, I add fractions of an ounce or less. And yes, my sheets are stained . So you want to be VERY careful when applying and using it...wiping off excess oil after letting some of the oil be absorbed is a good way to go.
I hope this helps! |

Well that discussion was..uh..lively?
I'm looking forward to trying AO. Hope to find it cheaply in a grocery store when I get back to FL in a couple months. S&H fees have been killing me this summer - can't justify paying more in S&H than the product. |

I've just been getting it from Mountainroseherbs.com. For a pure carrier oil, though, it is expensive. I always go for the 2 oz size when I order it, though if you can find it in the 1 ounce size, you might want to go with that, as a little goes a long way. When you first try it, dilute it *a lot*, and then work your way towards higher concentrations, once you get the hang of what sorts of dilution ratios work for you. Let us know how well it works for you |

I have a recipe for rejuvinating facial oil That I love here it is,
1 1/2 ounce jojoba oil
10 drops borage oil
10 drops vitamin E oil
3 drops geranium oil
3 drops neroli oil
3 drops rosewood oil
2 drops fennel oil
2 drops frankincense oil
2 drops sandelwood oil
1 drop vetiver oil
Mix jojoba, borage and vitamin E oil together. Add the essential oils and gently mix
massage on damp cleansed skin (several drops) am and pm.
I have very normal skin although 55, this I would not reccomend for anyone with oily or acne prone skin. I use this under my mineral makeup,
I just wait 15-20. minutes for skin to fully absorb the mixture. I am stuck for the time being in a very hot humid climate, think open your front door to a sauna.
I also use different carrier oils just because I can LOL. I like to give skin the benifits of different atributes of varrying oils.
I have many recepies I have collected over the years, will post more on DIY forum as time permits.
I am at this time caretaker for 88year old father, end stage CHF plus many other medical issues.
I am glad I found this forum it is great to read all of the posts, and find other cosmetic addicts to share with. I need the distraction and I honestly hope I can help others. |

My favorite mix is jojoba 50, rose hip 50 and two or three drops of essential rose oils. I also use just coconut oil for hair, face and body. |

Laura1 you are a better woman than I.....I have too many favorites to decide. It is the bane of my existance LOL I just like so many things, plus have been blessed with skin that pretty much tolerates anything. I never broke out even as a teen, not through a number of pregnancies, and menopause just meant not having to buy those wonderful plugs or pads any longer.....oversharing??????? LOL |

Alley, I know nothing about it but found this description on The Herbarie that indicates it might be suitable for creams and lotions, etc.:
Abyssinian Oil is lovely and light with an exquisite skin feel! This natural oil contains a high percentage of unsaturated C22 fatty acids, but is very stable against heat breakdown and is highly resistant to oxidation. Abyssinian Oil has a unique molecular structure not found in any other naturally occurring oil. Abyssinian Oil is perfect in creams, lotions, lipstick, lip gloss, foundations and will impart silky conditioning without greasiness. Abyssinian Oil provides a natural luster and an emollient feeling to hair care products.

Is another name for it "Mustard Seed"? |

havana you are such a rock star!!!! I don't know about the mustard seed name I haven't seen that yet.
I just stumbled onto the abyssnian oil when looking for a dry hair treatment and was hoping maybe someone had tried a DIY with it. I think I will include it in my next order and experiment a little. |

Hi everyone
another recipe:
Chapped (or cracked) Skin Oil
1 ounce Jojoba oil or carrier oil of choice!
4 drops Benzion rezin
3 drops Frankincense oil
3 drops Myrrh oil
2 drops Bergamot oil
Bergomot oil increases sun sensitivy, so sunscreen or avoid exposure while using. Omit it if you can't resist sun exposure or don't like to use sunscreen.
This is a recipe from a certain. aromatherapist and licensed esthetician as well as a cosmetic chemist. |
