For years, I thought highlighting and contouring were something for magazine ads and runway models or those who could spend an hour putting on their makeup or for special occasions with lavish amounts of makeup and evening attire.
I was wrong wrong wrong! I have all of 10 minutes each morning as I rush out the door, more than half my makeup is from drug store level and I'm in my early 50s. I do love makeup, have mountains and mountains of it but never did the highlight contour thing. Then the world of youtube was introduced to me about two months ago.
It is fast, easy, and what a difference for this early 50s face that is a bit full and maybe drooping. Grrrr that gravity.
Nothing special needed. Buy a matte bronzer or a facial powder in a dark color similar to what a bronzer for you would be. Use an angled brush blush. Tap tap tap the brush into the bronzer. Sweep the brush from the top or middle of your ear, I like middle of my ear as a starting point, toward your mouth and stop half way. Blend it out ever so slightly. Apply your blush above this path of bronzer. Applying contour takes me, maybe 15 seconds. Seriously.
After my bronzer/contour and blush are on, I apply my highlighter. Don't be a afraid of a bit of sheen! That was my problem. Fought it with all my heart. Now I appreciate how fresh and bright it helps the face look. You can use a vanilla eye shadow or even a concealer as a highlighter. Starting at the area right under your eye orbit, line up with your pupil and tap on the highlighter/eye shadow/concealer all the way back to mid temple. Now smooth and blend it out. I really like the pen style highlighters. Booth makes one and of course there is Touche Eclat. Buy it in a light color. You're not using it to conceal but to highlight.
If you start with just these two areas to contour and highlight, you'll soon graduate to another areas once you are over the fear or misperception. |

Can you give us a link of a video that shows what you are explaining? |

Hi, really glad you discovered highlighting and contouring. I learned it when i attended beauty school last year, and realised 'wow,...so this is the trick to all the models in magazine shoots'.
Another area you could highlight is just below the lip (near chin area)...and slightly above the inner eyebrows ..
Basically, stand at an area with light, and see where the light reflects on your face, thats where you put your highlighter.
I made up my cousin who didnt have much cheekbones, and i put contour on her and made a huge difference on her, as though she had cheekbones that popped!
For contouring, you can either use bronzer, or foundation that is 2-4 shades darker than your normal foundation. |
