This dry weather is really hurting my lips.
I always moisturize and use burts bees chapstick, but is there any other remedy that might help?

Drink a lot of water, take an essential fatty acids supplement.

I find Blistex DCT used over Cocoa Butter swivel stick to work well.

I put a thick layer of plain zinc over my lips at bedtime. Zinc is a great anti-inflammatory and I find it really helps sooth the lips.

I second the zinc. I use Badger's lip balm SPF 15 (11% zinc oxide). I also love Badger's big cocoa butter balms, especially the Creamy Cocoa one (less fragrance being better for hurting lips). The main ingredients in both are olive oil and cocoa butter, and of course ZO in the SPF version.

Oh, and it's definitely best to avoid mint, menthol, camphor, and other irritants/counter-irritants in "medicated" balms.

This thing about "plain zinc" at night, I just want to make sure...

I got "zinc oxide cream" for babies and the ingredients just say 15% zinc oxide ww, petroleum, mineral oil, anhydrous lanolin, beeswax & fragrance. Is that the right kind & percentage of zinc for healing purposes on skin & lips?

Also Zinc Oxide powder. It says .12 microns, cosmetic grade, approved for use on eyes, lips, face & nails. I'm guessing I can mix it with cocoa butter, oils etc at the same percentage?

I've been buying balms, etc (and have a pile of them that I can't even keep track of anymore) but would like to use up this other stuff since I have it.

My Zinc is Gold Cross Zinc Cream - 32% ZO - it also contains Peanut Oil so that would not be suitable if you have an allergy.

Try and find a Zinc product with a high percentage of zinc. IMO, the old fashioned ones are the best.

I use Sunright Lip Balm SPF 15 because it helps keep my lips from chapping in the windy, cold weather we have. It does not contain wax or mineral oil, so it does not melt in hot weather. It contains SeaLastin to protect collagen and elastin.

I agree with the Blistex reply - so far it's been the only product that works for me in the winter, but I have to apply it multiple times a day for it to really work and it takes over a week for lips to recover.
Aside from winter months, I use Shiseido Sun Protection Lip Treatment and wouldn't leave home without it.
Post if you find something that works better/faster

I recommend that you use a shower filter and light oils and you will have no dry skin.

I have not showered in tap water for over 16 years now have only been sick one time AND my fiances hair no longer is dry as well.

Very Happy

Try using Ole Henriksen Lip Salvation, it really works for me and it's the only lip balm I use now! It exfoliates your lips as well as moisturising them

I will second the Aquaphor ointment. Riley is the one that turned me on to it a few years back and I have not used anything else since. I used to be a Chapstick addict and then realized my lips were addicted to that stuff and it dehydrated them in the worst way. Aquaphor has been my saving grace in that department and a tube of that stuff lasts forever.

Hi, this is one of my big issues personally. My lips aren't 'dry' or 'chapped' per say, but I can't stand to not have a layer of moisturiser on them.

I have a difficult time wearing any lipstick and glosses are a complete no no as these products even the supposed 'moisturising' ones dry my lips out like crazy leaving them feeling all tight.

I've tried endless drugstore products and health lip balms and none of them help at all.

But......... I'm addicted to paw paw ointment Smile Have been for years. I find this protects my lips from the wind and elements and provides the moisture it requires. I often just wear this with a little lip pencil colour to make a lipstick/gloss that I'm comfortable wearing.

The only other thing I've noticed that comes close is Mac Lip Conditioner.
This is what the Mac website says about it....

'Lip Conditioner (Tube)
An emollient balm aimed at maxing-out repair by conditioning lips, locking in moisture. Contains Almond Oil, Shea Butter, Avocado Extract, Wheat Germ Oil, vitamins A and E. Formulated for high impact to use alone or under lipstick. Petroleum-based, but not goopy, helps seal in moisture to protect the lips from the environment.'

Hope this helps

Smile

That's my same issue Lucretia, my lips aren't chapped, they just feel tight and dry after I use any type of lipstick or gloss. They used to be severely dehydrated when I used the evil chapstick and I couldn't go more than 15 minutes without reapplying. Now that I've been using the Aquaphor, they are at a more normal state of hydration and I can go long periods without putting anything on them, but I still don't like not having anything on them. Old habits die hard I guess!! Laughing

My best method for lip color is using a lipstain and a layer of Aquaphor over it.

Try paw paw balm. Or Dermalogica Lip Renewal.
They're both effective. Tried them myself when i had severely chapped dry lips. You see results immediately.

I was on accutane for a while so I can relate to dry lips. They were so dry and dehydrated it was painful to talk or smile.I tried EVERYTHING and the only ting that worked and continues to work for me is neutrogena overnight lip treatment. The little tub not the day time tube. It really does work over night for me.

I've tried so many brands from drugstore to department store for my chronic dry lips. Almost all of them seemed to make the problem worse. My lips were fine as long as I reapplied the balm every few minutes but I couldn't go without anything on my lips. I recently tried Malin & Goetz lip ointment and I was floored by how well it worked. Within a couple of days my lips felt normal. It doesn't feel like lip balm, and has no taste or smell, which I like. I can't stand flowery or candy tasting stuff on my lips. The flavor just makes me lick them more often.

I think I've tried every brand out there (I have a drawer full of barely used lip balms to prove it). The best I've found is L'occitane's shea butter balm. The only things I use from them are their shea butter hand cream and the lip balm. It has a very faint vanilla-minty scent/taste. It's super moisturizing and lasts quite a while for me.
