Okay, I'm an avid DIY'er and hobbyist. I'll attempt to make just about anything. Looking at all of these units, I have to say that the prices really seem ridiculous to me. If I had to guess, I'd say these unit use MAYBE $50 worth of electronic parts/LED's. That's what...over a 300% markup?
Looking at the specs of the LED's used, it seems that these bulbs are readily available. The units sold on the LED Man site pretty much look like homemade units.
Has anyone looked into contructing one of these? Sure, I'd love to just buy one but with a kid in college, that's just not in the cards. |

I would not simply aim to copy a commercial device, because you do not know what science these are based upon. Instead look at the specs of the best performing ones PLUS do a literature search - what NASA were using that kicked off this trend, what has been studied since (search Pubmed and the AALS FDA submission). This way if you cannot replicate a specific wavelength you will have more idea what to replace it with, or what not to replace it with! Otherwise you could end up wasting $50 on parts for something that just does not work. Also consider how you are going to make the device 'light-tight' and cleanable. My understanding is you need contact with the skin and little light escaping for efficacy. |

Lorraineg57 - You're not the only one who has brought up this point. LEDs are indeed very cheap and making your own unit has been discussed here before - sorry, you'll have to do a search to try and find the thread. But I can't remember if anyone actually came up with the actual instructions on how to do it.
In general, the LED Man's units seem to get a good rap - if I were you, I'd look in to one of those if you don't want to fork out for the more expensive models. |

Wow...awesome, thanks SO much to all! I'm going to figure out the cost for a small handheld unit and go from there! |
