Hi all,
I've never really given any thought to taking care of my skin as I am a male and only 21 years old. I have always had very nice skin and face shape structure with no wrinkles and no crevasse's at all, it has deffinitly been one of the best points about me (not trying to sound up myself here, story has a point). But about 3-4 months ago now my skin seems like it suddenly turned to shit. It's like one day I woke up and bang, I had naso labial lines beggining at the corners of my nose and the volume on the corners of my mouth seems like it's sagged. I look in mirrors all the time as I work in a gym and it was very distressing to see this happen litterally over night.
So I began some research into skin care and have learnt alot over the past months and came to the conclusion that I may have caused this rapid onset of aging myself. I go to University which has been very full on the past year, below is a list of the lifestyle factors that I believe may of contributed to this.
1. Drinking only aprox 3 glasses of water a day.
2. Drinking coffee and energy drinks insted to stay awake and function during the day.
3. Only getting 4 hours of sleep each night.
4. Eating Fast food almost everyday and lots of sugar.
4. Stressed out over all the assignments and exams.
5. Drink alcohol every 1-2 weekends
6. Take recreational drugs approx once a month
I have always taken my good skin for granted and only realized all the bad things Iv'e been doing to my body since this drastic change occured. My question is do you guys believe that this change has been caused by my lifestyle or is it just a natural part of ageing? Also if use believe it's from my lifestyle do use believe the damage done is reversible or perminant. Thanks for your time and would love to her peoples experiences and knowledge with this. |

Harro90, yes, a poor lifestyle will affect your health and how that manifests itself could be in any number of ways including a deterioration in your skin.
I don't think it's irreversible, especially not when you're as young as you are--unless something else is going on.
The only way to find out is to correct what you already know you're doing wrong. There are people who could do all the things you list and still have great skin, but there are people for whom just one of those things could spell havoc on their skin and health. It all depends on your makeup, genes, environment, and I think how you've lived your life thus far can make a difference too.
From the time you're born, you come equipped to an extent to withstand whatever life sends to you...and sometimes you start off strong and sometimes you don't really come fully armed but develop that strength from a healthy diet and just good habits/nurturing. But no matter where you started off, it's never too late to make a change that could improve the rest of your life. But when you know better, you do better. So do right by your body as soon as you know better, and you will reap the benefits of what you sow in due time. |

Consider yourself lucky that you got your wakeup call at 21! You've done a good job at assessing what probably contributed to it, so just hack away at those as you're able to. It'll be tougher to ween yourself off the coffee, sugar & stimulants but easy to carry around a big bottle of water, and I think easier than ever to find healthier fast food options. As someone who's.. ahem.. noticed guys as they matured into their 20's and changed their habits, you'll be glad you made the switch to better food in no time! (i.e. your body will look more robust pretty quickly)
You may want to mention the sudden change to your doctor though, and go in for a checkup, just in case. Sometimes when we're running ourselves hard, we tune out things that may be going on healthwise. University's bad for things like that. |
