I saw this question asked on another forum and it made me wonder about the same thing.
Caffeine is a vasoconstrictor and that is one of the reasons it is used in products for people with rosacea and cellulite. It tightens the skin and narrows the blood vessels which decreases blood flow. The question she asked was whether this could be bad by limiting the amount of oxygen brought to the skin with it nutrients and otherwise damage skin cells. Do we know to what extent or what the impact may be of using products daily (eyecreams and the like) that have a high concentration of caffeine.
I noticed she didn't really get an answer there and now I'm curious if anyone else knows the answer. |

Caffeine squeezes excess fluid out, and is used commonly in eye creams to reduce puffiness. It does not constrict blood vessels to the degree that it would cause problems with skin nutrition or oxygenation. Skin has signals that will override if it needed more of these anyway.
Another benefit: many studies link calleine intake with significant decreases in several types of cancer, including highly prevalent UV-associated skin carcinomas. The mechanism by which caffeine protects against skin cancer is unknown.
I wouldn't worry about caffeine. |

Welcome Dr. J! I'm eagerly awaiting the skin care ingredients chart you have promised to put up on your website. |

Thanks for the welcome. I'm a crusader for truth in all things skin by night, but my day job is CEO & chief science officer (like Spock!) at a new/small company involved in regenerative therapeutics. Formerly executive at Johnson & Johnson. I have several science degrees, & was a practicing M.D. but gave it up to pursue research. I'm new to these forums, learning a lot as I stumble along. May not always have time, but for now here I am. |

DrJ ... just spent quite a bit of time reading your blog. Thanks so much for this excellent resource. I look forward to keeping up with new articles.
Would love to hear more from you about ingredients and products that you feel ARE effective and worthwhile. Also would be interested to hear your thoughts on the home skin care gadgets that have caught the interest of a lot of us these day ... LED therapy (which I currently use), the new crop of Fraxel lasers for home use and dermarolling (which I don't currently use but I'm a curious cat and feel intrigued to try them ) |

Does this mean you will be selling a skin care product in the (near) future? |

Eventually somebody will be selling, not me. My job is inventing stuff, hiring smart people, and sweeping the floor once everyone else has left. |

LOL. I get stuck sweeping the floor, too!
So, you are inventing or have invented a skin care product?
Getting back to your credentials, what degree(s) do you hold and from where? Do you have any published papers in peer reviewed journals that I can read? |
