I used a 10% glycolic from Paula Begoun's (PB) skin care line and am now seeking recommendations or skin care advice on how to treat my current side effects. The internet has nearly nothing to offer regarding adverse effects and only discusses the positive.
Initially I had used PB's 5% glycolic for 1 month and had no adverse reactions. I upped it to the 10% and left it on over night. The next morning my skin was red and severely parched not to mention the texture of the skin looked rougher. I assumed it was just revealing sun damaged skin underneath or that this was part of the exfoliation process. To make a long story short, I have since used the 10% about 6 times total. I now have very pronounced wrinkling around my eyes and especially on the forehead. My pore size has become significantly more visible. And any makeup whether tinted moisturizer or actual foundation looks cakey, dry, and overall hideous. I was told glycolic strips the water molecules from the skin cells and can potentially leave skin dehydrated. If anyone has had similar experiences or understands what has occurred to my skin, I would LOVE to hear from you.

I think you overdid it a tad. I've done lactic and glycolic acid peels this winter. After lactic, my skin's been fine. After glycolic, it's been very dry and rough, with skin flakes on my chin. It took about a week for my skin to settle. |

I would just mix jojoba oil with some aloe (high quality) and apply twice a day. Ditch everything else (except a gentle cleanser) for a few days - you just need to soothe your skin. Emu oil would also work well. |

OHHH OUCH!
I did this exact same thing except with BHA from DY. It said to wash off after two minutes, but I just failed to see the small print.
Well, I made the mistake of using petroleum jelly as my skin was so raw and tender as i needed a skin barrier. I broke out in clogged pores everywhere. Though, I used some bacitracin zinc ointment and applied it all over and then waited for it to sink in and then gentled padded away the excess. I did this to prevent me from getting further infection. I read somewhere that white petroleum (different than regular petroleum) helps with cell regrowth? Or something anyway it helped but is very messy. I also took a couple days off to heal
The rough skin though will come off later. The only way i found that worked was doing some light scrubbing in the shower. What really works is using a very gentle AHA to exfoliate off that rough skin. But i doubt your going to want to do that until your skin is healed and less red.
But depending on the burn I avoid irritating products like other acids for awhile and just wait for the skin to come off naturally.
I was going to try PC's products again because im so looking for a better AHA that i can alternate retin a with. However looks like I will be avoiding PC. Alpha hydrox clogged my pores. |
