Hi all,

Hope you can help, for a while now I have had a dry and tight feeling on my face and forehead. I have has scalp seb derm and have been using T Gel with salycilic acid init to wash my scalp.

Could the shampoo be causing my face and forehead to feel this way by running down from my scalp? This feeling is really getting me down, feels like I am wearing a mask Sad

Thanks.

Y6es it could definitely be the shampoo - salicylic acid is very drying as are the sulpahte surfactants. Have you tried applying a barrier product to your face before showering? Or less shampoo so it doesn't foam up so much?

Hi Firefox,

Thanks for your reply, what sort of barrier product would help? Is it only when foaming that the shampoo is irritating?

If anyone knows of a more natural shampoo for seb derm I would be grateful to find out Smile

Thanks.

No not only when foaming, that just suggests you are using more product that required to get your hair and scalp clean and IME makes it more likely the foam will get onto your skin. Some predilute their scalp treatment, applying it with a nozzle bottle. For a barrier you might use petroleum jelly, I like unrefined West African shea butter because it is 'nourishing' for skin.

SD is a nightmare to find gentle products for, they almost all contain sulphate surfactants because these are cheap and effective degreasers. However they are also known irritants as low as 1%. Shampoo bubbles running down my arm were enough to cause my atopic eczema to flare, it cleared completely when I quit all sulphates. Regenepure is the only sulphate-free shampoo I know of that contains ketocoazole, but I don't for sure know the percentage is effective in SD.

Are you consistently eating an anti-inflammatory, low glycaemic index diet? Adjusting your diet can reduce systemic inflammation, calm inappropriate immune response and change the composition of your sebum which is what the malassezia yeast feeds on. Of particular interest are oily fish, carbs and macronutrient combining.

Hi Firefox,

Can you advise as to what foods/diet I should be looking to eat?

Nine portions of fruit and veggies a day in the full rainbow of colours (red/ yellow/ green/ orange/ blue-purple), one portion of oily fish per day OR a supplement of 3g DHA and EPA, other healthy fats (low sugar dark chocolate/ avocados/ nuts/ seeds/ coconut), three portions of reduced fat dairy per day.

Small portions of lower glycaemic index carbs (beans/ lentils/ barley/ sweet potato/ wholemeal pitta/ jumbo oats/ brown basmati rice), small portions of meat (~100g), no sugar or white refined carbs, limit alcohol and caffeine, always combine carbs with protein and/ or fat, eat little and often always breakfast.

If you want to go further limit wheat because these are higher GI than most beans and lentils and tend to be processed, choose berries and tree fruits over other fruits, choose nuts and seeds richer in omega-3 (pumpkin, walnuts, ground flaxseeds), omega-enriched eggs, limit oils rich in oleic acid or omega-6s, plain live yoghurt in preference to cheese. Only do this last part if you enjoy and have access to a really wide variety of other foods, it's important for general health not to be too restrictive.
